First edition, extremely rare large and thick paper copy, of the most lavishly illustrated astronomical work published in the first half of the seventeenth century, with many full-page illustrations of Scheiner's observations of the sun and of the optical instruments he had designed for the purpose. "For his masterpiece, Scheiner produced the first monograph on a heavenly body, the Sun. Even today it is still an impressive volume, with scores of engravings of sunspots and the various instruments needed for solar observations" (Jesuit Science in the Age of Galileo). It forms one of seven parts of his principal monumental work Magisterium divinale (The divine teaching), a compendium of philosophy and theology that attempts to explain the whole natural world. The parts were first printed as separate works and no more appeared in print until Georg Stuchs in Nürnberg published the second edition of De fide et legibus and two other parts in a collection of Auvergne’s works in 1496, followed by three more parts in 1497. Krauss (1655-1719) was a famous artist, engraver and publisher in Augsburg, South Germany during the second half of the 17th century. He was one of the most influential artists of the baroque period in the south of Germany. This work contains 120 numbered plates, with two illustrations each - one biblical scene, in a golden border, on the upper half of the plate and the lower half of the plate contains a circular emblem within a eleborately decorated frame. The book really is a picture book, each act of folly depicted in a large woodcut in which the fool with cap and bells plays the main role, the text explaining the woodcut and its moral. It first appeared in German in 1494, in Latin in 1497, and went through hundreds of editions in many languages, as well as spin-offs of various kinds, including a song by The Grateful Dead in 1974. A Dutch translation appeared in Paris in 1500 and a few more in the following decades, including one at Antwerp in 1548, but the present edition was far more influential and was long even cited as the first.Sebastian Brandt (1457-1521) is famous largely for this verse satire, in which more than a hundred fools set sail in search of a fool's paradise.
