Children's entertainment has changed womewhat.

Dust jacket is scuffed top and bottom with small tears. Pages are clean and binding is tight. A very contentious title and content. 1959

London:: Chatto & Windus,, 1951.. First printing.. Hardcover. Near Fine/poor. 54pp, with illustrated endpapers. 1953 gift inscription to front free endpaper. Alternate pages of characterful illustrations in black and red, and rather feeble verse. Contents clean and firm. Small book, 14x11cms, in very clean pictorial red paper-covered boards, with little scuffs at the spine ends. In the protected unclipped, but torn, pictorial dust jacket, to the same design. This has some slight soiling, and has one-inch chips from the upper corners, with small loss from the other extremities, and some repairs with archival tape to the reverse. The book seems to be riding on the popularity of Helen Bannerman's books, her Little Black Sambo being advertised on the front dust jacket flap, and this being in the same format, but never so popular. London: Juvenile Productions Softcover; small square 4to; unpaginated. Rare. No date [1930s, 1940s?]. A unique cultural item, part of the Americas' and the U.K.'s history of racism. A picture and rhyme book derivative of the folk song "Ten Little Indians", purportedly adapted by Frank J. Green. This book's rhyme became popular in minstrel shows for decades. This text was the inspiration for Agatha Christie's novel of the same name, later retitled "Then There Were None". Stapled booklet in colour card covers. One staple rusting. Booklet in colour, some 20 pages overall. Ten in full colour, ten in b&w and orange. Lightly soiled and yellowed, else in nice condition. VG. Softcover. Very Good.

Oblong 4to with shaped decorative trimming along the top left and right side. Few minor defects on front cover, else an attractive if aged copy. The Gold Medal Series was completed in 85 parts and was printed in Holland between 1888 and 1919 (Osborne, volume 2, p. 215). On the back cover: 'The only recipient of a Gold Medal for children's publications.'
