March 23 - 1898 - First One Issued" directly on the title-page. A splendid association of the first book issued signed to author's own son. A very scarce first printing in the original maroon cloth binding. History of Thomas Jefferson and his work on the Declaration of Independence as well as the United States Constitution. A rather interesting history of the homes Jefferson wrote in. Hinges cracked. Wear to edges and corners. A bit of chipping to crown and foot of spine. Obviously, a well loved and used copy of this important book.

Description:
BENJAMIN HARRISON V (1726-1791). Harrison served as the 5th Governor of Virginia between 1781-1784 and was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. DS. June 29, 1784. Council-Chamber. A partly-printed document signed “Benj Harrison”: “I DO Certify, That Benjamin Smith XX of Edward Clark is entitled to the properties of land allowed a Sargeant of the Continental line, for three years service”. In addition to Harrison’s signature, “Tho Merriwether” signed the document. This document represents a land grant given to a veteran of the American Revolution. According to the Library of Virginia, the state offered bounty lands for Revolutionary War military service who had served at least three years continuously in the Continental or state forces. This land was in western Virginia, which is present-day Kentucky or Ohio. No bounty land was given by the state for militia service. San Augustine, Tx: November 11, 1834. Good.. [4]pp. on two folio sheets, the first sheet on official "Sello Tercero" paper with the printed seal of Coahuila y Tejas at middle. Old folds, minor chipping along two fold lines costing a handful of words in the second leaf, several archival tape repairs to closed tears, moderate foxing and toning. An interesting manuscript land deed documenting the sale of a tract of land in San Augustine, Texas by a mother and daughter named Mary Concesion Sims and Marguerite Latham in 1834. The tract of land is described in detail, situated "on the West side of the Act Bayou having half a mile & five chains front on the Laid Bayou and running backwards three miles and bounded on the North by the lower line of the land sold by Jose Lewis(?) to A.C. Allen, and on the South by the land belonging to Athanase Cerda...." The two women sold the land for $100, and because they could not write, they each signed the document with an "X."
