About This Item

Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1905. Limited Edition. Octavo. 92 pages, beautifully printed in Cambridge's finest type on handmade paper. This classic work on the seven deadly sins (see the facsimile of original titlepage): The Seuen deadlie Sinns of London. Here the original spelling of Elizabethan England have been retained. Here the seven deadly sins were prominent in the sermons and writings of medieval England with some variation found in Charles Dickens as he depicts the worst of 19th century London. This copy belonged to Charles Edmund Merrill, Jr. (1920-2017) who was both an educator and philanthropist from the fortune of the unbreakable trust his father had established. He was involved in many projects to benefit the poor. Bound in 1/4 vellum over gray-green paper covered boards, paper label lettered in black, spine lettering gilt, light wear to foot of spine and corners, some darkening to spine and board edges, internally clean and bright. A very nice copy.
