Turks, a journey of a thousand years 600 - 1600

By ROXBURGH, David J. (ed.)

Royal Academy of Arts,, 2005.. First published on the occasion of the exhibition in the RA 22 January - 12 April 2005. This magnificent catalogue accompanies a spectacular exhibition devoted to the artistic and cultural richness of the Turkic-speaking peoples. Essays by leading scholars trace Turkic history and cultural development, while artefacts ranging from painting, sculpture, textiles, metalwork and ceramics reflect the artistic influences that the Turks assimilated, from their early nomadic wanderings to the glories produced during the reign of Süleyman the Magnificent. The book takes the reader on a breathtaking journey from the eastern border of modern China to the Balkans in the west. Turkic groups adapted the cultures they encountered - Chinese, Mongol, Arab and Persian - and religions such as Shamanism, Buddhism and the sects of Islam.. Manichaean Art in Berlin Collections

By GULÁCSI, Zsuzsanna

Turnhout,: Brepols,, 2001.. This book is a comprehensive, descriptive catalogue of positively identified Manichaean artifacts housed in Berlin. The world's richest source of Manichaean texts and works of art is the Turfan region in East Central Asia, and the largest collection of such artifacts is found in Berlin. The Berlin Turfan collections resulted from four German expeditions that took place between 1902 and 1914. The commencement of the philological study of the thousands of manuscript fragments from Turfan led to the recognition of the first known, original Manichaean writings. Among these primary sources, Manichaean works of art were found as well. A sample of them, the best preserved items, appeared in two studies by Albert von Le Coq and a few pieces are frequently exhibited internationally and appear in catalogues published by the Berlin Museum of Indian Art. Besides these efforts, Turfan Manichaean art has enjoyed little art historical attention. A Manichaean artistic corpus has never been systematically identified among the Turfan remains. Artifacts belonging to this corpus have not been catalogued or examined by art historians as a whole. This book is a comprehensive, descriptive catalogue of positively identified Manichaean artifacts housed in Berlin. The majority of them belong to the State Museums of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, housed in the Museum for Indian Art, Berlin. In addition numerous illuminated book fragments are found within a manuscript collection belonging to the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and is deposited in the Berlin State Library of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation. From the two Turfan collections, 93 item-groups have been selected according to a specific set of criteria. The main entries of this catalogue are organized according to media and are presented as illuminated book fragments, remnants of leather book covers, painted and embroidered textiles and fragments of wall paintings. The largest group, paper fragments, includes 68 pieces and is sub-divided by book-format - codex, scroll and pustake (palm leaf format).. 30 x 21 cm, CCLXXXVIII+350 p., + ill. Hardback.

Veronese, Gods, Heroes and Allegories

Skira,, 2004.. Published on the occasion of the exhibition in Musée du Luxembourg, Paris - Museo Correr, Venice. In the panorama of sixteenth century Italian art, Veronese is the profane painter par excellence, in that he encapsulates both of the great pictorial traditions that most influenced the history of sixteenth century secular painting: the Tuscan-Roman tradition and the Venetian tradition. From the Roman school Veronese took the preference for mythological and allegorical representation that Giulio Romano, Raphael’s most famous pupil, expressed at Mantua; from the Venetian school he captured the splendour and magnificence of colours that made him a regal artist, whose work aimed to celebrate the joy of life and illustrate the wonders of the world and the beauty of men and women.. 28 cm, 183 pages, illustrations in colour, hard cover, dust jacket Art - kunst|tentoonstellingscataloog

Parian. Copeland's Statuary Porcelain

Antique Collectors' Club,, 2007.. Parian - a high-quality, unglazed porcelain - was developed in the early 1840s by Copeland & Garrett, which was the first company to exhibit it in 1845. Its purpose was to provide small sculptures for the public at a time when full size marble statues were gracing the homes of wealthy people. Parian - Copeland's Statuary Porcelain tells this fascinating story in detail, beginning with its origin and introduction. The book goes on to describe the manufacturing processes of mould-making and the casting of the figures. Also included is a comprehensive catalogue of Copeland's productions of statuettes, groups and portrait busts.. 28 cm, 352 pp, with 84 illustrations in colour, 463 in b/w, publisher's cloth and dust jacket.
