A detailed account of the fighting between the Modoc Indians and US troops in Northern California during the first half of 1873, following the alleged murder of unarmed peace commissioners sent by President Grant. This includes accounts of battles with Modoc leader Captain Jack and his band near what is now Lava Beds National Monument. Gillem offers both a detailed report on the battles of Sand Butte and Dry Lake. as well as a defense of his actions at the "Lava Beds" for which he was later criticized.
