Fremont's attempt to bring a bras s cannon from the Mississippi River to California. The effort fai led and the cannon has been lost to history. The prevalent theori es at that the cannon was buried somewhere on the east slope of t he Sierra Nevadas and never found or that the cannon was dug-up b y Native Americans and dumped into one of the deep remote canyons found on the eastern slopes of the Sierras. Thick 4to, 3/4 brown leather, marbled boards. 1056 pp. Willis moved from the east coast to Sacramento county in 1871, where he engaged in farming near Elk Grove, and teaching, until 1892. He then became a member of the editorial staff of the Record-Union, and continued the association for thirteen years. In 1879 he was tendered an appointment on the county board of education, of which he remained a member for twenty-three years.

CONDITION: FAIR. A clean, tight copy internally. Covers well worn with substantial rubbing to edges, corners, and spine. Front board nearly detached. Owner's inked and penciled names on front pastedown and title page.

John Sutter; he managed the Sutter properties during most of the critical period between 1848 and 1851, and was himself the founder of the city of Sacramento.
