Glendale CA: Arthur H. Clark Company. 1981. 1st ed. "The Fremont Cannon" is Volumn 11 in the Frontier Militar y Series. This book covers J.J. Fremont's attempt to bring a bras s cannon from the Mississippi River to California. The effort fai led and the cannon has been lost to history. The prevalent theori es at that the cannon was buried somewhere on the east slope of t he Sierra Nevadas and never found or that the cannon was dug-up b y Native Americans and dumped into one of the deep remote canyons found on the eastern slopes of the Sierras. New copy; book is pr istine but it has been in storage and the d/w has some light soil ing, light shelf-wear along edges, and a few age spots. .

This memoir s cover his early years, through the Depression and his work with the California Conservation Corp, through the publication date 1 943. Good+: Presents as very good-near fine overall but chip at t op of spine results in loss in 1/8” of cloth, lightly rubbed co rners. Inscribed by Grigsby on fep to Ruth Ann Newport, County Hi storian, Tuolumne County CA. Good+ dustwrapper has ½”open tear at top of spine; similar at top back panel, and some light spott ing .

Thick 4to, 3/4 brown leather, marbled boards. 1056 pp. Willis moved from the east coast to Sacramento county in 1871, where he engaged in farming near Elk Grove, and teaching, until 1892. He then became a member of the editorial staff of the Record-Union, and continued the association for thirteen years. In 1879 he was tendered an appointment on the county board of education, of which he remained a member for twenty-three years.

CONDITION: FAIR. A clean, tight copy internally. Covers well worn with substantial rubbing to edges, corners, and spine. Front board nearly detached. Owner's inked and penciled names on front pastedown and title page.

John Sutter; he managed the Sutter properties during most of the critical period between 1848 and 1851, and was himself the founder of the city of Sacramento. By 18952, the Sutter holdings had all been lost, and Sutter Jr was a penniless exile in Mexico. He returned to California early in 1855 hoping to retrieve some of his lost fortune. Here, published for the first time, is the story of his life in California, telling how the property was lost and how he had been drugged and swindled. Document 9, 1855. Report on the sale of the interest of the State of California in the property within the water line in front of San Francisco [known as water lots]. The sales occurred between September 1853 and October 1854. The appendices list the blocks and properties, the buyers, the dates, and the prices for sales and for re-sales, and a summary of the revenue by sale date. OCLC lists only the three copies at the Huntington Library, Harvard Law School, and Saint Patrick's Seminary & University.
