An early attempt to outline the problems of trout stream ecology and conservation. <br /> <br /> Designed by Eugene V. Connett, founder of the Derrydale Press. A note in Connett's own copy of this title identifies it as the first book he published. Dark green leather spines and fore corners with marbled paper sides, gilt ruled boards, marbled endpapers, and all edges of textblocks gilt. Spines are titled and ornamented in gilt with five raised bands. Mild rubs to leather along joints, some light rubs to board edges, and some faint scattered foxing inside. Front endpaper of volume I has separation along hinge but still sound. Very good overall.. Black and white engravings throughout. A handsome set of the large paper first Nicolas edition of Walton, acclaimed as the finest "Angler" ever published. Pirsson writes of fishing for trout in New England, ouananiche in Quebec, grayling in Montana, and salmon in the Atlantic. Six hand-colored plates by John Simpson. A study of one of the rarest books in angling literature. There are six hand-colored plates by John Simpson depicting 30 flies. The frontispiece is an actual countersunk Black Gnat fly tied by Heddon to Scotcher's pattern. This is copy #25 in a limited edition of 165 copies, signed by Heddon, the artist of the plates, John Simpson, and at the rear by A. F. Sismore, the binder. Housed in original box.

Contents include selection, care, and rigging of the rod, the art of casting, trout habits, the angler's flies and how to tie them, description of trout-fly patterns, and an appendix classifying flies according to body color of the described artificial flies. <br /> <br /> Includes an envelope containing two old trout flies on #10 hooks. Both volumes have a neat prior owner bookplate on front pastedown. Lacking the slipcase. Bound in red cloth over boards with gilt-stamped spine and upper board titles, deckle edges. A solid, handsome set.. Color and black and white illustrations, fold-out map. Haig-Brown was an Englishman who spent most of his adult life on British Columbia's Campbell River. This fine Derrydale production is well illustrated with line drawings, plates from photographs, color plates of fish by E. B. S. Logier, etc. This copy has the foldout map facing page 3 in volume one, which is apparently absent from most of the edition.
