Moscow: "Vsekokhudozhnik", 1932. Octavo (17.8 × 12.7 cm). Original printed wrappers; 39, [1] pp. interleaved with [11] leaves of plates on coated stock. Stamp of the "Vsekokhudozhnik" library to title. Very good. An illustrated catalog for an exhibition of artists who held residencies in Soviet factories and construction sites in 1931. The exhibition featured 243 works by 64 artists with residencies at the Dnieper Hydroelectric Station, collective fisheries and port of Baku, central electrical station at Kuznetsk among many others. The participating artists included members of prominent Soviet art organizations such as Nikolai Kupreianov (OST), Aleksei Kravchenko (AKhR) and Ivan Maliutin (OMKh). The introductory essay by the artist Nikolai Maslennikov makes an argument for widespread government support and employment of artists.

The residencies were organized by Vsekokhudozhnik, a powerful and prestigious organization, which operated 1928-1953, commissioning art for exhibitions at factories, museums and worker's clubs. "Its membership expanded from 87 in January 1930 to 1500 by mid-1931, reflecting its importance in ensuring some means of livelihood to its members" (See J. Delvin, Media and Communication in the Soviet Union, pp. 31-32). The purchasing commission of the organization was composed of artists and critics who vetted the works of art, encouraging the artists to "police themselves", with the works in this exhibition reflecting the most up to date themes and styles approved by the state. This copy from the library of "Vsekokhudozhnik," with the organization's stamp to title.
