Claflin, the sister of Victoria Woodhull, started as a medium and quack healer, but with the backing of Cornelius Vanderbilt, she and her sister opened the first woman-run stock brokerage on Wall Street in 1870. They published a newspaper (Woodhull and Claflin's Weekly) that promoted women's equality and dove into sensitive topics; after publishing accusations of infidelity against the famous preacher Henry Ward Beecher, the ensuing legal troubles led the sisters to leave for England in 1877. In 1885 Claflin married Francis Cook, the Viscount of Monserrate, and soon took the title of Lady Cook. Baker, a law student, won the election in what he hailed as a victory for "sophistication" among the student body. In 1970, Baker and his partner had applied for a marriage license in Minnesota, had been denied on grounds that two men could not marry, and challenged the decision in the courts with the result that they obtained the first known lawful same-sex marriage certificate in the United States in 1971, the same year as this election. Baker's campaign featured several humorous posters, another one of which can be seen on the Wikipedia page devoted to him.
