Summary:

Cambridge: John Field, 1660. Pulpit folio (17.5 x 12 in). The extra illustrated pulpit folio King James New Testament with Apocrypha. Known as the restoration Bible to commemorate the return of Charles II to the throne of England.

Description:

This edition of the Bible was originally printed in 1659 by John Field (Herbert 666), and much of the edition was bought by John Ogilby, who added several engravings (Herbert 668). For selected volumes he further added a large number of engravings bought from Nicolaes Visscher of Amsterdam, and the most expensive of these were ruled in red and bound in red morocco. This volume contains the whole of the New Testament and is bound with the Apocrypha at the back. It is illustrated with an engraved sectional title page for the New Testament, and 66 further double page engravings. The number of engravings varies in this edition varies from set to set, but for the second volume, 66 plates is much more than usual. The text is presented in two column Roman font, the whole ruled in red.

Ddddd-Zzzzz^6, Aaaaaa-Cccccc^6, Dddddd1 (New Testament); Iiii-Zzzz^6, Aaaaa-Ccccc^6 (Apocrypha).

Binding:

Contemporary red morocco, spine richly decorated in gilt with gilt-paneled boards. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers.

Condition:

The boards have some marks and wear, and bumped corners. The spine is rubbed and scuffed with some surface cracking and slight loss to tail. The binding is tight. The gilt edges are somewhat worn. The name "R Kew" is inked on front endpaper along with a date of 1779. Many of the plates have closed tears which have been nicely repaired with tissue, and there are some other short closed tears. One plate only has a very small hole. There are very occasional marks, but on the whole the text is clean and bright.

Description: There are several clippings pertaining to this edition of the Bible mounted on the front pastedown. Printed general title page (1743) laid down with loss to the lower border and imprint, which have been replaced in facsimile. Ornamental headpiece at the beginning of Genesis. Text in two column black letter, with cross references and short summaries at the beginning of each chapter. The text is based on Martin Luther's version by way of the 34th edition of the Halle Bible, with books three and four Esra and three Maccabees supplied from the Berlenburg Bible.
