The Image of Africa British Ideas and Action, 1780-1850

By Curtin, Philip D.

Madison: University of Wisconsin, 1964. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Uncertain, Possibly First. Strange publishing history here. Book says "published 1964" McBrides says FP for this era, I am skeptical, I think this is 1st hardcover of this title by professor Curtin (price $8.00, 526 pages). It was done in hbk. U.K. version in '65, 2 v. pb' @73 (won the Schuyler earlier) and redone by UW later, again in 2 v. pb format. Curtin bio. bibliographies do not clarify. From profs. Memoir 'Fringes' pg. 130 IOA done in '64 - pg. 149 IOA done in '67 -pg.180 has 2nd unpub vol. of IOA done in 1982, who knows? To further muddy matters I believe the 2v. pbs. are this books content. Any clarification gratefully accepted, would love to know how the TOC on the pbs read. UW ignoring my Emails, I do not blame them. Hardcover book handsome and straight, unmarked, jacket tattery, no long tears, decent..

Old Naumkeag

By Webber, C. H.

Salem/Boston: A.A. Smith/Lee and Shepard, 1877. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. Several years ago, we purchased many books from historian/educator Thomas Perkins. He was a descendant of Massachusetts settlers from the earliest era. This is one of his books and has the penciled note "To Warren Perkins" in a Spencerian hand, title page. It's exterior and binding were too rough for sale in my estimation. It has been restored by an expert of unparalleled ability. Boards retained and recovered in dark tan cloth, the dark brown labels (front and spine) have been retained and laid on to superb effect. End sheets also replaced with wholly age appropriate papers. Perhaps the handsomest 19th century book on our shelves. . .Spine is done with 6 ribs, text very sharp, 312 pages followed by 7 ads. Text is age darkened and not supple but quite decent. Foto will be made and added to this listing when time allows. Laid loosely inside the front covers is a sheet of wax paper covered note paper with perhaps 300 words of reminiscences, mentioned are Gov. Bradstreet, Moses G. Farnum, The Globe Tavern, Deliverance Parkman, and many others. I surmise from the hand that it was written at the turn of the century or well before. *We feel that books offered for internet sale should be described thoroughly and accurately. The Jubilee Of The Constitution. A Discourse.

By Adams, John Quincy

NY: Samuel Colman, VIII Astor House, 1839. Book. Fair-. Pamphlet. 1st Edition. This 136 page item matches the Sabin listing. 9 1/4" x 5 3/4" with brown covers (unattached) that may not be original (no cover treatment is given in the listing) heavily edge chipped, pencil notes front. Text is foxed, sewn, decent not heavily chipped, worn but not badly so, foto to come. From the collector's notes "to the NY historical society being the fiftieth anniversary of Washington's inauguration." Will try to shoot title page for listing. Style could be called pamphlet, sewn in one signature with 3 hole treatment, original I feel sure. Was planning to have new (overlay) covers done but the restorer is swamped. Excellent candidate for restoration. Washington inaugural frontispiece is in place. *We feel that books offered for internet sale should be described thoroughly and accurately.
