Astounding Science Fiction 1957- 3 issues The Dawning Light

By Campbell, John W.- Randall, Robert (Silverberg, Robert; Garrett, Randall)

Ny: Street & Smith , 1957. Book. Good+. Soft cover. 1st Edition. Recently, we acquired a large group of ASFs from the 50s most, as these vary in condition from Good to VG using traditional standards. Please bear with me, as the descriptions will be by someone unaccustomed to this format. I will hope to make up in detail for any failure of experience. The magazines are, I think, the 1st appearance of TDL, it is serialized in the Mar. Apr. May issues which are this group ( RR is pen name of Silverberg and Garrett) Silverberg's bibliography shows this written in '57 and done in hardcover in '59 by Gnome. I could be mistaken, but the 1953 copy online seems like a misdating. Garrett has the cover for May, a short novel called "What's Eating You?" All are text browned more than I generally see, all have wear (e.g. spine; May has tape and the cover is loosening). That said, the cover art is fantastic. Photographs will follow and the magazines will be stored closed in acid free bags in future..

Astounding Science Fiction, Many Issues

Astounding Science Fiction, Many Issues

By Hubbard, L. Ron

NY: Street and Smith, 1950. Book. Good. Trade Paperback. 1st Edition. John W. Campbell was the venerable editor of this pulp SF monthly. This listing will be for several issues (including Hubbard's 1st writing, that I know of, on Dianetics) and for that reason I have listed him as author. The listing includes Hubbard 1st and 2nd essays, Dianetics advertising, reader reaction and earlier fiction (in 3 parts) by Hubbard. Please bear with me, as the descriptions will be by someone unaccustomed to this format. I will hope to make up in detail for any failure of experience. All are text browned more than I generally see, and some, especially the Dianetics writing issues, have wear (e.g. spine/cover) beyond what I am used to. That said, the cover art is stunning and most are unusually sharp I think. Photographs will follow and the magazines will be stored closed in acid free bags in future. An item by item summary: The May '50 issue with LRH Dianetics blurbed on cover approx 35 pages with comment by Campbell. Some upper spine chip and crease and wear. The Jan '51 issue LRH approx 20 pages article contrasting the worthiness of Hitler and Edison and addressing other topics. It is titled "Dianometry" and a full page Dianetics ad (pencilmark) back panel. Other issues include Dianetics advertising (Aug '50/Feb '51 beautiful copy/April '51 cover loose, mag quite worn/Nov '51 cover loose) accompanied by a psychoanalysis offer seemingly from Dianetics in one case and a Medical viewpoint by J.A. Winter MD, a Hubbard collaborator I think, he introduced the May'50 article. The Aug '50 issue includes letters to the editor discussing Dianetics. OK this is where it gets odd. Somewhere in this writing LRH mentions "thiotimoline" I do not recall where, I am throwing in a March '48 issue where Asimov references it. . . The magazine is quite worn and unlovely. It is the spoof substance's 1st appearance, here in the March '48 "endochronic etc," issue. Finally (thank God) w include the 3 part novel "The End Is Not Yet" serialized in '47 in decent but imperfect copies. I have seen one of the LRH pseudonyms in working with others of these and will keep my eyes peeled for more. Separate listings will follow for 80 or so other ASFs. This current listing includes 10 altogether with one-book priced domestic shipping..
