J. B. Lippincott. Good. 1943. Hardcover. Blue cloth. 556 pages. Index. Illustrated throughout with photographs and line drawings. Well, here is a jewel of a book. A snap shot into the "American High School Girl" of the 1940- 45 era. With WWII in full swing and women moving into the work force the role of a woman was changing forever. Not in the best of condition, the cover is soiled and worn but the binding is solid. There are folded corners and some soil within the text block but remains a very solid copy and an interesting read. A text book aimed at educating the high school girl in the finer arts of dressing well and appropriately. Of some interest is the section on undergarments which included thoughts on historical changes in use and purpose along with the more 'modern' view of why they are worn and how they should fit. There are 16 units total. Given here is the unit title and one subject heading for units 1-9. 1. The Girl Herself- How should an American girl carry herself? 2. Expressing Beauty in Our Clothes - What is a good dress design? 3. Becoming Dress for the High School Girl - What shall she wear for active sports? 4. Planning Clothing Expenditures -How may a clothing plan be put into operation? 5. The shopper and Her Responsibilities - What are the responsibilities of the shopper? 6. Guides for the Shopper - How could the buyer's task be simplified? 7. Selecting Fabrics - How does the use of a fabric determine its choice? 8. Selecting Ready-Made Garments and Accessories - How shall ready-made undergarments be selected? 9. Sewing Equipment and its use - How is the sewing machine operated? Units 9-16 focus on Planning, Making and Caring for Clothing. The last section is What are the special needs of the older daughter? An interesting view of history and culture for the American WWII - Post War high school woman. ; 8vo .

Description:
Fair. This copy has character! Sort of pale olive binding, instead of the cream that is pictured. This was a high school text with the names of several girls inside the font cover, pencil marks on cover many notations on fly leaf. Text itself is very clean and well cared for [surprise, surprise!] there is a sketch of a "stylin'" lady/girl of the day on back fly leaf. Binding is cracked by title page and last page of index, but no loosening of pages. Just a fun look at a schoolbook and styles/designs of the past.
