Very good copy of the Large Paper Copy of the Quarto edition of Erasmus Darwin's masterpiece with the William Blake engravings. With the first edition of Part 1: containing the Economy of Vegetation, 1791, and the second edition of Part 2: containing the Love of the Plants, 1790, bound in one volume. Large Paper Copy in 29 x 22.5cm (Henrey gives 26 x 21cm for all 1791 editions). Part I has 10 plates by Henry Fuseli, William Blake, Henry Webber and others engraved by William Blake, Anker Smith, Thomas Holloway. Includes frontispiece "Flora attired by the Elements" by Henry Fuseli engraved by Anker Smith, four plates of the Portland Vase attributed to Blake (bound next to Note XXII page 53 to 59), fold-out botanical of a Cyprepedium orchid, botanical plate of Erythrina, and Sections of the Earth. Suite of 226 etchings (of 366) from Deuchar's scarce A Collection of Etchings, 1803 apparently almost all of Vols. 1 and 2 of the 3-volume set.
The engravings are trimmed to the plate mark and mounted on cream paper, from one to five to a page, ranging in size from 4cm x 4cm to 14cm x 19cm. Some etchings are signed Deuchar, a few have the artist's name (e.g., Bega, Ostade, Vliet, Castiglione) and most are dated from 1783 to 1802.
The suite includes religious scenes and beggars by Rembrandt, several heads by Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, many rustic scenes by Adriaen van Ostade, and a few after Stefano Della Bella, Hendrick Vliet and Cornelis Bega, five plates from Robert Watson's Five Senses suite, and two plates by Adriaen Brouwer (engraved by Thomas Major). Subjects include tavern scenes, gamblers, drunks and smokers, school scenes, bagpipers and fiddlers, tradespeople, lovers, beggars, ice-skaters, etc.

Complete with16 colour woodblock plates printed by Edmund Evans, each with one to four designs, for a total of 36 charming illustrations. Fairies and elves with dragonfly wings flirt and tease, ride snails, fly in the air on butterfly-drawn leaf carriages, sleep under mushrooms, and joust riding on beetles.
