Description:
New York, New York: Avante-Garde Media, Inc., 1969. Hardcover. Good. Single issue of this short-lived (Jan. 1968-July 1971), bimonthly magazine dedicated to radical politics, edited by Ralph Ginzburg, which ceased publication when he started serving his prison sentence in 1972 for violating federal obscenity laws. (He later wrote "Castrated: My Eight Months in a Federal Prison" to describe his time there). Although he tried to revive it as a tabloid newspaper with his wife after his release, his attempt failed and the new Avant-Garde lasted only one issue. The magazine was "seminal, but somewhat overlooked by a wider public.which broke taboos, rattled some nerves and made a few enemies." The magazine marked the third major collaboration between Ginzburg and Herb Lubalin, the magazine's talented art director, & together the two created publications known for their "candor and provocativeness.[which] landed them in legal trouble." Lubalin's artistic work on… Read More

United States Postal Service, 1992. First Edition First Printing . No Binding. As New. Stutzman, Mark; Berkey, John. Issued by the United State Post Office as part of a pre-release promotion for its new Elvis stamp, a commemorative 29-cent issue in honor of singer/actor Elvis Presley (1935-1977). Out of many designs originally submitted, two made it into the final running--"young" & "old" Elvis, known colloquially as "skinny Elvis" & "fat Elvis," featuring artwork by (respectively) Mark Stutzman (airbrush & acrylic on board) & John Berkey (oil on board). Reaching out to the US public for the final decision on which design would become a stamp, the USPS placed preaddressed ballots in post offices across the country & in the 13 Apr 1992 issue of People magazine. Responses (over 1.2 million ballots were received) overwhelming favored "young Elvis. The stamp was officially dedicated at the singer's Memphis home, Graceland, on what… Read More

New York, New York: Freedomways Associates, Inc., 1979. Soft cover. Very Good. Published quarterly by Freedomways Associates, Inc. from 1961-1985, this journal was one of the preeminent publications for African-American politics & culture during the years leading up to & traversing the civil rights movement in the US. It was founded by some of the most prominent figures in the movement--Louis Burnham, Edward Strong, & W.E.B. DuBois & edited by Shirley Graham DuBois, with other rising Black stars serving as contributing editors. Description:
Soft cover. Very Good. A leftist-leaning periodical in continual publication since it was launched in 1909 as La Follette's Weekly, changing to La Follette's for a few years, & then, in 1929, to The Progressive. This sample of issues provides a time capsule into the politics of the era, when trust in the American government was beginning to erode & increasing numbers of young people were taking to the street in protest to voice their concerns about the Vietnam War. Articles address issues that are paralleled by concerns that still plague the country in the 21st century, including resistance to American involvement overseas, "hostage-taking" in the persons of POWs used as "political pawns,'' the continuing struggle for a national health insurance, racial relations, American Indians & other people of color as "alien Americans,'' oil & environmental exploitation, the failure of public schools, decline of inner cities, cinematic violence &… Read More

Forestville, California: Eclipse Enterprises, 1992. First Edition First Printing . No Binding. New. Bright, John; Lee, Paul. Very scarce & highly controversial collectible from the early 1990s.The focus of instant outrage from many different groups, the cards were completely banned in many areas. There's no way around it: they glorify criminals & totally forget their victims. Things have changed since this time, thankfully, but they are a bellwether of where the culture was in the 1990s, attesting to the popularity of the true crime genre. Right as the set was going into production came the acquittal of the Los Angeles police officers involved in the 1991 brutal beating of an unarmed black man, Rodney King, following a traffic-related pursuit--captured on video by a neighbor. A "bonus" set of 4 cards commemorating this event was added to the original 220 cards issued in Series One (Serial Killers & Mass Murderers, 110 cards) & Series Two (G-Men, Gangsters, 110 cards), +… Read More
