A FIRST EDITION, but slightly later printing (no company seal on cr page, different front flap blurb on DJ) of this classic novel about the futility & disillusionment brought about by war, partially based on the author's own experiences in WWII. A Pulitzer Prize finalist when it was published in 1948, this copy has the 2nd state DJ, still same $4.00 price. Hardcover book with flat black cloth-covered boards & white lettering to spine is in G+/VG- condition: generally very clean, binding tight & square, modestly tanned pages, heavier to endpapers.
