Description:
London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1874.. Three volumes. Large octavos.Three-quarter green calf and marbled boards, spines elaborately gilt extra, gilt labels, half-titles bound in.. Foretips shelfworn, crowns of spines frayed a bit, bookplate in first volume, but very good. First edition of the first component of this this substantial and occasionally controversial historical record, edited by Henry Reeve, and published posthumously. "Greville did not stoop to collect or record private scandals. His object appears to have been to leave behind him some of the materials of history, by which the men and actions of his own time would be judged. He records not so much public events as the private causes which led to them; and perhaps no English memoir-writer has left behind him a more valuable contribution to the history of the 19th century" - Wikipedia. A second component, covering the period 1837-1852 appeared in 1885, and the concluding two volumes, covering 1852 to 1860, appeared in 1887.
