THUVIA, MAID OF MARS by Burroughs, Edgar Rice - 1920

New York: Grosset & Dunlap, 1920. Hardcover. Good Plus. The fourth novel in Burrough's Barsoom series and the first to feature characters other than John Carter of Mars. He appears in this book but surrenders top billing to his son, Carthoris, prince of Helium and Thuvia, princess of Ptarth, both minor characters in the two previous novels. The plot is one familiar in Burroughs' novels: Thuvia is kidnapped by the Dusarsand Carthoris, madly in love with her, chases after, encountering a variety of new and old alien societies standing in his way. This copy is an early Grosset and Dunlap reprinting of the A.C. McClurg first edition issued in 1920. It was originally published in serial form in "All-Story Weekly" in 1916. About 5 1/2 x 71/2 inches, 256 pages plus 11 pages of publisher's ads, with illustrations including frontispiece by J. Allen St.John. Bound in red cloth-covered boards with red and black lettering and design on front cover and spine. Text edges are slightly soiled but text is complete and unmarked except for previous owner's signature in ink on title page. Sorry, no dustjacket. Boards and spine show moderate wear particulary along edges, corners and spine ends. Spine is faded though lettering remains legible. Binding is beginning to loosen but hinges are not cracked. Front end page shows prev. owner's signature, a 1930s date, and a Maryland address as well as repeating title and Burrough's initials. This copy is moderately worn but without the tears and creases that are often found in a hundred-year-old book. It is a decent reading/study copy.
