Binding Variants in English Publishing 1820-1900 appeared in 1932, followed 6 years later by More Binding Variants which added to and revised some of the earlier theories. The 2 works trace the history of bindings following the introduction of the first cloth binding around 1820. The general study is followed by specific examples of research applied to a selection of nineteenth century first editions, with comments on methods of dating bindings, library bindings, and aspects of publisher's bindings.
