63, [1] pagesCloth covered boards with printed paper labels. Top corners bumped and one very small mark to rear board. Very good condition.Until Windle and Pippin's bibliography this was the authoritative reference book for Dibdin's publications. The annotated list covers 106 items with full descriptions, and was referred to as the "backbone" of their work by Windle and Pippin. This volume contains a tipped in compliments slip from the Houghton Library "and as remembrance of Bill Jackson", signed by Bill Bond (co-author of the foreword to this volume).This is a heavy volume and, as consequence, the shipping cost will be higher than the average quoted in my store listings.

Gilt title to spines. Some scratching and minor marking to boards. Some loss of paper to board edges. Small indent to top of rear board of both volumes. Corners slightly bumped on both volumes. Foxing to pages 201-205 in volume one. Foxing to end-papers and frontispiece in both volumes, and foxing to other but not all plates. Page edges somewhat dusty. Text generally very clean with occasional minor spots of foxing. Good condition.Volume one includes a list of subscribers, list of plates, and table of contents all bound in after the preface. 8vo., [8], xiv, 618, 64, plus indexes, [4] pages.Full leather binding with five raised bands and gilt title. Inner gilt dentelles with marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Leather to joints, leading edges of boards, and corners rubbed with marginal loss on corners. Corners bumped. Minor scratching and indents to boards without loss. Light foxing for first +/-30 pages and sporadically to a few subsequent pages. Heavy foxing to rear end-paper and final page of indexes. Otherwise text very clean. Very good condition except for defects reported.
Three plates present of the four for regular copies listed by Windle & Pippin "seldom all present in regular or large-paper copies" (Thomas Frognall Dibdin 1776-1847 A Bibliography, New Castle, Oak Knoll Press, 1999, p.42) – missing the frontispiece portrait of Dibdin. The cuts at pp. 250, 254, and 484 are on india paper which Windle & Pippin note are "sometimes found" in copies (ibid. p,43).

Volume 1 only of 2 volumes.
Half title, volume 1 title-page, 379 pages, [1], errata, [4], list of subscribers. Leather covered boards with buckram spine (presumably for repair or strengthening), inner joints strengthened with tape, joints of rear end-papers also strengthened with paper repair tape. Neat repair to small tear on title-page. End-papers browned. Considerable wear to covers – rubbing, splitting and some marks, corners heavily worn with loss of leather and board. Binding firm however. Ink and pencil annotations to front and rear end-papers, Internally very clean, with minor staining to pages 28-33.
Ex-library book with library sticker to inside front cover. Library stamp to title-page and library markings on spine.

One of one hundred copies. Boards covered with glazed cartonnage gilt (noted by Windle & Pippin, p134, as an original binding).Loss of cartonnage to the spine. Corners bumpedand rounded with loss. Heavy foxing to inner-covers, end-papers and throughout text to varying degrees. Fair condition for a very rare item.The first of three French responses to Dibdin's Tour in France and Germany, comprising of a translation of Dibdin's thirtieth letter from his Tour. What marks this publication out is the introduction written by the Parisian printer Georges Crapelet contesting Dibdin's veracity on occasions and criticising his general writing style as being too concerned with effect, and over-complicated (" Il vise singulièrement à l'effet, ne dit jamais rien simplement ").
Crapelet contrasts Dibdin's petulance and perpetual enthusiasm with the patience and contemplation he argues is necessary for bibliographical studies.
