No Place for A Lady : Tales of Adventurous Women Travellers A Journal

By hodgson, Barbara

Toronto: Greystone, 2003 " Between the 17th and 19th centuries, a motley band of women defied gender conventions, enduring exotic diseases, plagues of scorpions, and other life-threatening situations-all in the name of adventure. The frequent target of Russian thieves, Mademoiselle Jacquemart began sleeping with a brace of pistols after one attempt on her life left her with a fractured skull. Lady Ann Fanshawe disguised herself as a cabin boy to confront a band of Spanish pirates. Isabella Bird toured Japan by horseback despite a severe back affliction. And there were many more, some famous, others whose tales and fates have faded into the obscurer corners of history. .profiles [of] adventurous women who sacrificed personal comfort and respectability to pursue experiences traditionally open only to men. Filled with fascinating portraits, historical maps, and intricate drawings . at once a beautifully illustrated exploration of early travel and a spirited celebration [which] . celebrates the spirit of adventure and wonder that animated these intrepid women ."216p. illus bibliography.index. An Artist's Garden

By Brender a Brandis, Gerard

Erin, ON: Porcupine's Quill, 2001 A selection of some of this Canadian artist's finely detailed and dramatic wood engravings (The original engravings are hand printed on hand made paper using his own Press) Here is his artistic manifesto : "The process through which I go as I create an image remains largely mysterious to me, but I do know that it is far from merely registering, as accurately as possible, the material presented to my eye. I change many lines to satisfy my sense of design, I invent textures which will, I hope, suggest the surfaces of the objects before me, and I create systems of light and shadow that will best reveal the fragment of the world I have chosen to depict. What pleases me is that the image I offer the viewers challenges them, like musicians faced with a score, to engage in a creative process of their own, filling out the image with remembered experience. Turning my white dots and dashes into the shimmering, iridescent wings of a dragon fly -- and believing in their own conjuring -- is the necessary corollary to my process of abstraction. That people are so ready to enter into this give-and-give game fills me with wonder and gratitude." Inscription on title page in his elegant handwriting. 163p. plates plus fold-out triptych, A nice gift volume.. Signed by Artist. 1st Canadian Edition.. Original Wraps. As New.
