Heartaches

By Patsy Cline

Universal City: MCA, 1985. Audio Cassette. Very Good/Very Good. excellent condition tape in original case with inserts; Music Club's Heartaches is a basic 18-track collection that features many of Patsy Cline's biggest hits, including "Crazy" and "I Fall to Pieces." Since it overlooks some essential items, it can't be recommended as an introduction or an overview, but it's still a nice sampler. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

The Cream of Clapton

By Eric Clapton

New York: PolyGram, 1995. Audio Cassette. Very Good/Very Good. tape in excellent condition in original case with inserts; Eric Clapton was contracted to Polydor Records from 1966 to 1981, first as a member of Cream, then Blind Faith, and later as a solo artist and as the leader of Derek and the Dominos. The 19-track, 79-minute Cream of Clapton disc surveys his career, presenting an excellent selection from the period, including the Cream hits "Sunshine of Your Love," "White Room," and "Crossroads"; "Presence of the Lord," Clapton's finest moment with Blind Faith; "Bell Bottom Blues" and "Layla" from Derek and the Dominos; and 11 songs from Clapton's solo work, among them the hits "I Shot the Sheriff," "Promises," and "I Can't Stand It." The selection is thus broader and better than that found on 1982's Time Pieces collection, and with excellent sound and liner notes by Clapton biographer Ray Coleman, The Cream of Clapton stands as the single-disc best-of to own for Clapton's greatest recordings.

Whitney Houston

By Whitney Houston

Arista, 1990. Audio CD. Very Good/Very Good. excellent condition CD in original jewel case with inserts; BMG Direct edition; As big a hit as it was -- and it was a multi-platinum blockbuster, spinning off several chart-toppers -- it's not easy to think of Whitney Houston's 1985 debut as the dawning of a new era, but it was. Arriving in the thick of MTV, when the slick sounds of yacht-soul were fading, Whitney Houston is the foundation of diva-pop, straddling clean, cheery R&B and big ballads designed with the adult contemporary audience in mind. Houston's background lay in the former -- actually, it was even riskier, encompassing a stint with the experimental Bill Laswell outfit Material -- and her benefactor Clive Davis knew all about selling records to the masses. Appealing as this album is, Davis may never have imagined how Whitney Houston would shift tastes, pushing toward skyscraping ballads where the singer's affectations, not the songs, were paramount -- a move that later led to hollow records, but on Whitney Houston the songs were as important as the immaculate productions.

I'm Already There

By Lonestar

Sony, 2001-06-26. Audio CD. Very Good/Very Good. excellent condition CD in original jewel case with inserts; BMG Direct edition; Lonestar has a way with passionate songs that either make hearts soar or eyes well up with tears; think previous number ones "Amazed," "Smile," and "Tell Her" from the triple platinum Lonely Grill. That album solidified and shaped their career -- and yet, they don't want to be known as a "ballad band." I'm Already There has five ballads, including the title track, so it doesn't seem they're working overtime to change their image. But why fix what isn't broken? This four-member band delivers full-on on those moving ballads, due in part to Richie McDonald's big vocal prowess. But they do pretty well on the other seven tracks of up- and mid-tempo tunes too, including mentionables "Unusually Unusual" and "Every Little Thing She Does." Accomplished songwriters Annie Roboff, Holly Lamar, Lari White, Chuck Cannon, Mark McGuinn, and McDonald himself lend themselves to the pool of talent that makes I'm Already There another platinum album in the making. ~ Maria Konicki Dinoia, Rovi

Bruce Springsteen Greatest Hits

By Bruce Springsteen

Columbia, 1995-02-28. Audio CD. Very Good/Very Good. excellent condition CD in original jewel case with inserts; BMG Direct edition; Here's the challenge in putting together a Bruce Springsteen compilation: though he scored 18 Top 40 hits (12 of which made the Top Ten) through 1994, Springsteen is not a "singles artist." Some of his biggest hits have come with his slightest or least characteristic material; he has written numerous songs that were hits for other artists; and some of his most memorable songs were not released as singles. While a Springsteen "hits" collection logically would contain such Top Ten singles as "I'm on Fire" and his cover of Edwin Starr's "War," few Springsteen fans would miss their omission; on the other hand, many would support the inclusion of "Blinded by the Light" and "Pink Cadillac," Top Ten hits for Manfred Mann's Earth Band and Natalie Cole; and anyone even remotely familiar with Springsteen's albums and concerts would have trouble countenancing the absence of such non-singles as "Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)" and "Thunder Road." Facing this challenge, Springsteen has adopted his own set of criteria.

The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle

By Bruce Springsteen

Sony Legacy, 1984-08-21. Audio CD. Very Good/Very Good. excellent condition CD in original jewel case with inserts; BMG Direct edition; Bruce Springsteen expanded the folk-rock approach of his debut album, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J., to strains of jazz, among other styles, on its ambitious follow-up, released only eight months later. His chief musical lieutenant was keyboard player David Sancious, who lived on the E Street that gave the album and Springsteen's backup group its name. With his help, Springsteen created a street-life mosaic of suburban society that owed much in its outlook to Van Morrison's romanticization of Belfast in Astral Weeks. Though Springsteen expressed endless affection and much nostalgia, his message was clear: this was a goodbye-to-all-that from a man who was moving on. The Wild, The Innocent & the E Street Shuffle represented an astonishing advance even from the remarkable promise of Greetings; the unbanded three-song second side in particular was a flawless piece of music. Musically and lyrically, Springsteen had brought an unruly muse under control and used it to make a mature statement that synthesized popular musical styles into complicated, well-executed arrangements and absorbing suites; it evoked a world precisely even as that world seemed to disappear.

Falling Into You

By Celine Dion

Columbia, 1996-01-01. Audio CD. Very Good/Very Good. excellent condition CD in original jewel case with inserts; BMG music direct edition; Celine Dion's Falling into You returned the Canadian vocalist to the top of the American charts, and for good reason. Although the album is formulaic, it's a well-executed, stylish, and catchy formula, accentuating her natural vocal charm. Dion shines on ballads like "Because You Love Me" and mock epics like Jim Steinman's "It's All Coming Back to Me Now." Between those two peaks, she tackles dance-pop and love songs with grace; that effortless elegance saves the mediocre material on the album from being tedious. Though there are a couple of weak tracks, Falling into You is a remarkably well-crafted set of adult contemporary pop and Dion's best album. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

A New Day Has Come

By Dion, Celine

Legacy, 2002-03-26. Audio CD. Very Good/Very Good. excellent condition CD in original jewel case with inserts; Like politicians, pop superstars staging a comeback need to be on message, devising a story line and sticking to it from conception to completion. Celine Dion's message is a simple one -- one that would be evident to anybody paying the slightest bit of attention. After a ballyhooed semi-retirement following 1999's semi-collection All the Way -- a retirement where she gave birth and tended to her manager/husband's recovery from cancer -- it was time to begin a new chapter in her life, something made explicit in the title of the comeback, A New Day Has Come.

The Colour of My Love

By Céline Dion

Sony - 550 Music / Epic, 1993-11-09. Audio CD. Very Good/Very Good. excellent condition CD in original jewel case with inserts; The Colour of My Love follows the same pattern as Celine Dion's eponymous breakthrough, and while the songs aren't quite as consistent this time around, the record is nevertheless quite successful, thanks to the careful production, professional songwriting (highlighted by "When I Fall in Love," "The Power of Love," and "Think Twice") and Dion's powerhouse performances. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

Let's Talk About Love

Let's Talk About Love

By Celine Dion

Sony Music Canada Inc, 1997-11-18. Audio CD. Very Good/Very Good. excellent condition cd in original jewel case with inserts; Falling Into You finally established Celine Dion as a superstar in America, so its sequel, Let's Talk About Love, was designed to consolidate her position as a newly minted star. The album was constructed as a blockbuster, featuring Dion's trademark melodramatic ballads, some carefully tailored dance-pop, a bevy of duets with the likes of Barbra Streisand and the Bee Gees, and production and songs from adult contemporary gurus David Foster, Jim Steinman, and Walter Afanasieff. Given that so many talented craftsmen worked on Let's Talk About Love, it makes sense that a number of the cuts succeed according to adult contemporary terms -- they are predictably sweeping showcases for Dion's soaring, technically skilled voice. As usual, the singles (including the Streisand duet "Tell Him" and the Titanic love theme "My Heart Will Go On") shine the most brilliantly, but even the filler is immaculately produced. If the end result doesn't quite gel as an album, that shouldn't be surprising -- this is music by committee, a product that was made to appeal to the widest possible audience. Such a calculated execution guarantees that anyone who liked one of the singles shouldn't be disappointed by Let's Talk About, but it doesn't necessarily mean they'll remember all of the record after it's finished playing. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

Titanic: Music from the Motion Picture

By James Horner [Composer]; Celine Dion [Performer];

Sony Music Canada Inc, 1997-11-18. Audio CD. Very Good/Very Good. excellent condition CD in original jewel case with inserts; James Horner's score for James Cameron's epic romance Titanic is much like the film itself -- against all expectations, it delivers exactly what it promises. His score is grand, without falling into typical melodrama, and delicately romantic, without being sickly sentimental; it offers genuine emotion and excitement, with the haunting vocals of Norwegian singer Sissel providing a nice counterpoint to Horner's blend of strings, vocals, orchestras, and synthesizers. Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" may feel a little like an afterthought, especially after experiencing Horner's wrenching, affecting score, but its heart is in the right place. Nevertheless, it is Horner's instrumental work and its whirlwind of emotions that makes the score of Titanic a voyage worth repeating. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi
