Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 1995. Cloth, x, 207 pages, [24] pages of plates, illustrations (some colour); 25 cm. Tight, clean copy. Dust jacket protected in a mylar book cover. A fine copy of the first printing. "Through an exploration of the reception of modernist painting, Yule Heibel discusses how West German artists, intellectuals, and audiences attempted to fashion a secure 'image of man' in the wake of the most serious and radical crisis in modern history: Nazism and the Holocaust. In the period from 1945 to about 1950, expressive and 'unbeautiful' elements in abstract painting were discursively and practically purged, mainly because expression was a reminder of dangerous and traumatized subjectivity. This purging resulted in a hegemony of 'harmonious' abstract art, which critics to date have viewed primarily as a decorative art and thus an avoidance of Germany's twentieth-century history. Until now, no one has analyzed the discursive maneuvers of…

Description:
New York: Rizzoli International Publications, 1979. 278 pages, illustrations (some colour); 24 cm. A good reading copy, with underlining on a dozen pages. "The Spanish artist Antoni Tapies first received worldwide recognition in the 1950s for his "matter" paintings: relief-like works composed of dry pigments, sand, marble-dust and paint, which he scraped, incised and pierced. His early paintings have been likened to walls, their graffiti-like scrawls denoting the only means of free expression available under the Franco regime. The artist's later works express less tangible symbols and themes. This volume is the catalogue of an exhibition organized by the Guggenheim Museum, New York, in collaboration with the Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume, Paris. It presents the essentials of Tapies's art - an original use of texture and materials, coupled with an expression of intense intellectual, political and artistic feeling. The book provides an overview of the artist's life and…
