New York: John W. Lovell Company, (1886). 12mo (18cm). Original printed paper wrappers; 193pp. Endpapers and wrappers (versos) are ads. Pulp paper text somewhat tanned and brittle, with minute chips to corners (away from text); cover wraps lightly chipped and soiled; Good. Sympathetic (to George) account of Henry George's 1886 New York mayoral campaign, which he ran on the United Labor Party ticket. Despite almost certainly out-polling his Democratic opponent Abram Stevens Hewitt, George was denied victory through the machinations of Tammany Hall. Instead, his defeat marked the death knell for the short-lived United Labor Party. In an interesting side-note, George's Republican opponent in the 1886 election was Theodore Roosevelt, who came in a distant third in the voting. The current work, written by the… Read More

Pasadena: Equitist Publishing House, 1909. First Edition. 12mo (18cm). Publisher's red cloth boards, lettered in white on spine and front cover; 428,(2)pp. Lettering mostly rubbed away on spine; front endpaper neatly removed, else a tight, Very Good copy. A fictional romance of the Single Tax movement, set in California, written by the wife of one of the movement's primary spokesmen Warren E. Brokaw. The Soul of the World received predictably favorable reviews within the Single Tax press, but appears never to have found its way into the heart of a larger audience. Bachman was deaf from birth and died young from what is described in her obituary as "progressive paralysis." SMITH B-31. Missed by Hanna and not in Baird (California Fiction). Scarce in commerce; about a dozen verifiable copies in U.S. institutions.

Description:
New York: Sterling Publishing Co, 1894. First American Edition. 12mo (18.5cm.); publisher's grey printed wrappers; iv,[2],133,[21](ads)pp.; illustrated ads in rear. Wrapper and textblock exceedingly brittle, some small losses to extremities affecting text with brief loss of meaning, stock quite browned, last few leaves of advertisements chipped with some loss of meaning. Good only overall due to poor paper quality. Henry Georgist utopian novel first serialized in "Our Commonwealth" (Adelaide, Australia), a newspaper published by Ignatius Singer to promote land nationalization and the single tax. The work describes an anonymous narrator's experiences after being elected dictator of England and his activities promoting Georgist tenets, though the tale ends rather abruptly when it is revealed that it was all a dream. (See Lyman Tower Sargent, "Michael Flürscheim: From the Single Tax to Currency Reform," in "Utopian Studies," Vol. 21, no. 1 (2010), p. 160.) For other editions see Negley 89 and Sargent, p. 56.
