A quiet unassuming man, a pacifist, a notable amateur violin player and a great gardener.] . Cloth. Very Good/Slightly rubbed.

Venetiis (Venice): In Officina Valgrisiana, 1571. Illustrated with many hundreds of half-page woodcuts. pp (14), 922, (13), the title page is laid down and has slight losses, the next leaf is restored at the corner with no loss of text, the preliminary index is a bit thumbed and marked, a little marginal staining to the last hundred pages, a little marginal staining and marking on occasional pages, but overall very firm and tight and in better condition than many copies. There are very neat early manuscript notes on many pages, mainly limited to the common English names. Contemporary (?) simple lined calf, rebacked and with new endpapers in the early twentieth century, with the original spine laid down. An inked paper title label on the spine. The Hartland Library copy, with labels and manuscript notes attached to the front endpapers. RARE. The Red Lion in St Paul's Churchyard, London: R. & J. Bonwicke, 1707. "The Second edition, with the addition of many physical herbs and their vertues". 12mo (measures 165mm x 105mm), pp (6), 349, (29) (though errors in pagination mean that there are actually 411 pages of main text), a little used and marked throughout, the contemporary signature of an early owner on the blank facing the title page (Wm Brecknock - his book - 1714), and his signature again on the preface page, the front endpaper very nearly detached and the hinge at the title page cracked but very sound, lacking the rear endpaper. Contemporary panelled calf, joints rubbed, worn through at the corners, lacking a few small portions around the spine. From the estate of the collector and bibliographer Norman Douglas Simpson with his bookplate and his presentation label on the front endpaper. RARE. [Blanche Henrey 288.]. Second edition. Full-Leather. Good.

At the Ship in Paternoster Row & Katharine Street: T. Longman & J. Nourse, 1748. Second edition. Small octavo, pp x, 414, slightly age-toned internally with very occasional foxing, the fore-edge a little uneven, a weak hinge at pages 178/179, the front endpaper and the title page are unevenly age-toned, but otherwise unusually clean internally for a work of this nature. It is bound in the original printer's paper covers, a little worn and creased, the spine a little cracked and chipped; a very remarkable survival - in it's original state and comparatively unused.. With an engraved portrait frontispiece, and with 258 engravings of plants drawn by Henderson and engraved by Thomas Bewick, thick octavo, pp xxviii, 902, [13], {lacking one leaf of the index and with several leaves neatly repaired}, a small adhesion spot to the frontispiece and the title page has led to slight loss of surface to both, generally clean and tight throughout, twentieth century full calf, lined to the margins, decorated spine, slight scuff damage to the uppoer cover otherwise just generally very slightly rubbed. [Before the new binding, the book had obviously been dropped on its upper corner and all pages are bruised and creased - see illustration. ]. Second edition. Full-Leather. Good.
