Sumptibus Rulandiorum, Typis Iohannis Bringeri, Francofvrti, 1617. Antiquarian. hardcover. Very Good+. 7 3/4" × 5 1/8" × 2 1/8" (19.7 × 13 × 5.4 cm) . Small 8vo. Bound in fine hardcover alum tawed pigskin. Beautifully bound in alum tawed pigskin over beveled wooden boards, elaborately blindestamped, with some hardware (clasp) still present, an excellent specimen of this style of binding and with a unique centerpiece stamp—an arrow up and an arrow down, with a bridge between the two incorporating a cross (representing Jesus coming to earth, dying on the cross, and rising again). A very similar ancient symbol can be found on Pictish rock carvings in Scotland (see the Elgin Cathedral Church Pictish stones). Josephus was a 1st century Jewish-Roman historian, who mentions Jesus in his writing, providing a 1st century non-Christian reference to the man Jesus Christ.
