Beautifully bound in alum tawed pigskin over beveled wooden boards, elaborately blindestamped, with some hardware (clasp) still present, an excellent specimen of this style of binding and with a unique centerpiece stamp—an arrow up and an arrow down, with a bridge between the two incorporating a cross (representing Jesus coming to earth, dying on the cross, and rising again). A very similar ancient symbol can be found on Pictish rock carvings in Scotland (see the Elgin Cathedral Church Pictish stones).Josephus was a 1st century Jewish-Roman historian, who mentions Jesus in his writing, providing a 1st century non-Christian reference to the man Jesus Christ.
