The field game.

By Pawson, John J.

Eton: Spottiswood & Co, 1935. A short history of the game, 1893-1934.- The Field Game is one of Eton’s two brands of football, the other being the famous Wall Game. It is like soccer in some ways – the ball is round and a player is not allowed to pick it up – but the off-side rules are more complicated (there being both horizontal and lateral offside) and there is also a scrum called a ‘bully’. A team scores goals much as in soccer (although there is no goal-keeper), and one can also score ‘rouges’ (rather like tries) and attempt to convert them. Seven players make up the bully, a 'fly' plays behind the bully players (similar to a scrum-half) and there are three 'behinds'. Whilst the fly and the behinds generally possess greater footballing skill, the key to success lies with the bully players and their teamwork and fitness. A sound clean copy. p.104. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo.

NOTE ABOUT THE ARTIST: Joshua Charles Armitage (1913-1998) used the pen name Ionicus to differentiate his illustration work from his oil painting. He first contributed to Punch in 1944 and the sparse lines for his cartoon characters were often counterbalanced with background and architectural details for the most part similar in style to Acanthus. He was equally able to draw in a variety of styles bringing to mind early Mahood, Clive Collins, Arthur Watts and even Thelwell, using a modern graphic style and ordered composition. He drew many book covers for PG Wodehouse.[ BR2 ]. Soft Cover. As New/Red Card Folder - Very Good . Landscape 39cm x 30cm .

The Canary Book: Containing Directions for the Breeding, Rearing, and Management, in Health and Disease, of Canaries and Canary Mules; together with Descriptions of all the Different Varieties of Exhibition Canaries, their Points of Excellence, etc.

By Wallace, R. L. (Robert L.)

170, Strand, London: The Country Office, 1111. [Undated - Circa 1880 ]: This copy first has been professionally recased. Interestingly, the boards appear original, but unlike many quoted copies, this one has a floral blind design, common in the mid - later Victorian period, but no gilt adornment, other than the title to spine. This has been relaid, and binding is now totally tight and secure. The covers have been quite heavily marked and stained, but are rigid and complete. We have taken the opportunity to fit new period feel endpapers and pastedowns. The book is collated as follows: Title Page; Chapter 1; p. 5 - 224, index, 12 full page engravings, 11 of these canaries by Wood and Temple. Pages are secure, but a number with grubby marks etc but entirely legible, the plates are not blighted similarly, being clean. An interesting item, which I presume to be the earliest copy of this title. The Plates have dates as early as 1874. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾". Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo.
