At the bottom of the title page is written, "Donated by M... B...." Empty library pocket on the rear flyleaf. A sound copy with clean text. Relates the possible story of the escape of Marshal Ney, one of Napoleon's officers, who was sentenced to execution. Some years afterward a Frenchman turned up in North Carolina claiming to be Marshal Ney.

Chapel Hill, NC: The Orange Printshop, 1953. First Edition First Printing . Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo. 389 pages, indexed. Hardcover bound in black cloth. Light to moderate wear to the binding. There are a couple of signatures on the front endpapers. One reads, "Oct. 7, 1953 / In appreciation / L. J. Phipps." Phipps was one of the contributors to the book and wrote Chapter 17, "The Churches of Orange County." He was also the Chairman of the (Orange County) Bicentennial Committee. Laid in loosely is a brochure for the Orange County Bicentennial Observance, dated Oct. 7-13, 1953, where apparently this book was purchased. There is an old brown tape stain at the top of the title page where the brochure had been taped and detached. A sound copy. We've found a little pencil underlining in Phipps' chapter on Orange County churches. Illustrated with photos.

Slim hardcover bound in grey paper-covered boards with a white paper label on the front cover. Moderate rubbing and wear to the binding; there is a damp stain on the spine. A few flower petals are laid in loosely with some offsetting, but this does not affect any of the text. Illustrated frontis. Comes with the bookplate (as issued) of Charles W. Whittlesey, opposite the dedication page (to book was dedicated to Whittlesey). The bookplate is a little bent on one side. INSCRIBED by the author on the front flyleaf. "With a heart full of warmest greeting to all my Friend at No. 70 Harbor Streets. / The Sutherlands / From / Dugald Stewart Walker / Christmas, 1924." Scarce. Limited to 500 copies. Dugald Stewart Walker (1883-1937) was a native or Richmond, Virginia. He was noted for his illustrations and bookplate designs. This book was dedicated to the memory of Charles W. Whittlesey, who led the "Lost Battalion" in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive during WWI.

The front flyleaf also has a small browned circle at the top corner from a sticker that was on the mylar over the front turn-in. Text is unmarked but slightly musty. Illustrations throughout.
