Samstag (1904-1968) was a published poet who spent most of his life working for Time magazine in advertizing. This, his only children's book, was selected by the New York Times as one of the best illustrated children's books for 1952. The illustrator, Shahn (1898-1969), was a Lithuanian American artist known for his left wing politics and works of social realism. Paper-covered boards have light edgewear and minor soiling, paper clip indentation on first few pages; a clean and sturdy copy. Dust jacket is lightly rubbed with a few closed tears on edges. .

"A Hunter" is professionally produced; "Groundhog" appears to have been altered with the covers taken off and fastened to some blue card stock, covered with a clear adhesive vinyl and the card stock covers then attached to the existing text block via newly bound-in end papers. This latter booklet is signed by both author and illustrator. Minor soiling on cover of "Hunter" while the other booklet is what it is.; Signed by Author .

The exterior shows mild wear to the corners and spine tips while the spine and the one-third of the board adjacent to the spine are darkened or sunned.
