Written during the Second World War and influenced by the temper of the times, these 'talks' were first given at Yale as the twentieth series of Dwight Harrington Terry Lectures and are presented in a slightly expanded form here. The three lectures are: "The Aim of Education", "The Dynamics of Education" and "The Trials of Present-Day Education". Two page index of proper names at the back. The book shows mild wear to the fore corners of the boards and the spine tips while the interior is clean and the binding is tight. The unclipped dust jacket is worn on the edges with chips, closed tears and creases and the spine is darkened. .

First published in 1912 by O'Blenes who was the inspector of schools for the Moncton school district in New Brunswick, Canada. The third edition has added examples and the lesson sequencing is re-arranged. Previous owner's name on the first page. There are a few lines underlined in the text, usually subject and lesson headings, otherwise clean with a tight binding. The covers have minor wear and show light though general soiling. .

From the author's preface: "The purpose of this book is to provide a one-year's course for students aged about eighteen plus. Its aim is to keep well to the fore those skills utilisable in everyday life as well as desriable in themselves. Beyond question, a wide and readily available vocabulary, a variety in sentence structure and an ability to build substantial, connected and lucid paragraphs are useful and enviable possessions. Blue card stock covers, gilt lettering on the front with yapped edges on open sides over a sewn binding. A partially bilingual text (English - French) laid out in a lesson format, 25 lessons in all, with phonetic drills, vocabulary, text, questions, translation exercise and an assignment. Illustrated with many black and white drawings of different types, styles and sizes. The yapped adges are worn though not chipped, the binding is a tad shaken and there is a fair amount of pencil marginalia throughout. Brother Bernard Roland was the president of the Concours Bilingues Canadiens and a teacher of English at the Académie de Québec. .
