Description:
circa 1940. Good. Some ink stains, rubbing and creasing to the paper.. Label to the verso reads: This was a working day scene at the bottom of Military Road Port Elizabeth, where many of the wool brokers had their warehouses. This pencil study was the working drawing for the graphic my mother completed in 1940. The subject matter of figurework never failed to fascinate her and she was one of the very few South African artists who undertook such a demanding challenge. The dignity of the working man impressed her greatly and if he were in rags covered in patches or draped in sacking she would exclaim "Isn't he beautiful" and marvel at his appearance. Certified as an authenticated work of Dorothy Kay by her daughter Patricia Kit. There is an unfinished sketch of a harlequin to the verso.
