Albion Tourgee (1838-1905), a major figure of the Reconstruction following the American Civil War, argued on the losing side of the notorious Supreme Court case "Plessy v. Ferguson." History now recognizes him to have been on the right side, morally. A Radical Republican, his popular novels were told with sympathy toward the African-American experience. This is a Very Good copy of the reprint of Moore's reissue in 1882 (his Preface indicates by popular demand). Dark blue pebbled cloth binding with gilt lettering and decoration on the spine and front cover. Clean text; 560 pages, illustrated; pages supple but starting to tan due to the acidic pulp paper used. A very popular book in its time, but uncommon to find in undamaged condition. Philadelphia: Hubbard Brothers, 1888. An interesting and important source for the work of the Christian Commission, which provided both religious support and social services to the Union troops. Edward Parmalee Smith (1827-1876) was Field Secretary to the Commission. Somewhat scarce - only six institutional copies held. Originally published in 1868, this is a Very Good copy of the First Edition done by Hubbard. 512 pages, indexed. Clean and supple text. A nice example of Victorian decorative binding, gray cloth with embossing in black and gold. Small tear to FFEP, and the upper part of the spine has been rubbed to rob it of some of its color. New York: Harper & Bros, 1863. "Fanny" Kemble (1809-1893) was well-known as a British stage actress when she married an heir to an American plantation in Georgia. Her journal has been an important source for the condition of slavery at that time. Evidently it circulated in manuscript among Abolitionists prior to its wartime trade publication. This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition. Black pebbled cloth binding, heavily stamped on the front cover, and with gilt lettering on the spine. Written anonymously, but per WorldCat and LoC, written by George Monroe Roger (b. 1846). This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition. Brown cloth binding with light ruling; titles on spine and front cover are gilt. Clean text; 193 pages. Illustrated by J.H. Fry. An exceptionally clean textblock, but the binding does show a bit of wear: mild bumping, rubbing to the head and foot of the spine, and a small tear on the rear cover.
