The only published book source for the 1948 film noir, originally a play by Lucille Fletcher. Ms. Fletcher adapted the play for the film version in 1948, and this novelization, based on her screenplay, was published just prior to the film's release. The film version was directed by Anatole Litvak and starred Burt Lancaster and Barbara Stanwyck.
