About This Item
New York: Firth, Pond, 1892. Vintage sheet music for the song written by Stephen Foster in 1853 song, issued in conjunction with late-era performances by traveling bands using the Christy's Minstrels moniker in 1892.
Originally written as an anti-slavery ballad by Stephen Foster around 1852, the song was sold to American music company Firth, Pond, and Co., who published this edition the following year. Although the intent behind the song's composition was sympathetic to the abolitionist cause, the song grew in popularity widely through its use in minstrel shows and "Tom shows," where it was performed in blackface, often catering to many of the same demeaning traditions and racist stereotypes common to the genre. The composition nevertheless remains all the more important for its complex history, and for its continued influence on cultural perceptions of the antebellum south.
8.5 x 11 inches. Bi-fold, with one laid-in sheet. Very Good plus, pages supple but with moderate wear and foxing throughout.
