Cannes, France: N.p., 1964. Original souvenir programs and film credits material showcasing some of the films from the 1964 Cannes Film Festival. It was this festival, the seventeenth one to be held, that the award name was changed from the Palme d'Or to the Grand Prix du Festival International du Film, the name used until 1974 when it returned to its former title. Archive of 103 vintage vernacular photographs, a mix of double and single weight, by psychologist and documentary filmmaker Barnett Addis, circa 1950s-1960s. 21 photographs with his stamp on the verso, several of which also include brief manuscript pencil annotations noting the subject, location, or year. As a faculty member, and later director, of the Behavioral Science Media Laboratory at UCLA, Addis made numerous education and instructional films on subjects relating to mental health and psychological or developmental disorders. These include "Tourette's Syndrome: The Sudden Intruder" and "Nurse-Patient Interaction" (both 1976), and "Suicides" (1981). London: Mainline, 1982. Collection of ten photographs, comprised of five vintage studio still photographs and five vintage reference photographs, from the UK release of the 1982 documentary. Five photographs with a label from the film's UK distributor, Mainline Pictures, on the verso. A black satire documentary, presented without narration, tracking the beginning of the nuclear warfare era, compiling a wide range of archival material (including photographs, television footage, newsreel clips, advertisements, radio programs, and government-propaganda films) from the 1940s, 1950s, and early 1960s. 10 x 8 inches. London: British Broadcasting Corporation [BBC], 1935. Collection of seven vintage black-and-white still photographs and two double weight sepia photographs from the UK release of the 1935 British documentary film. Included is the original trasmittal envelope, with the printed label, "On His Majesty's Service." Featured in two of the photographs are Henry Hall and his Orchestra (a.k.a., the BBC Symphony Orchestra), the BBC "house band" in the 1930s. The earliest, and perhaps the first, documentary on the British Broadcasting Service, paying tribute to its technological greatness, the span of its reach, the people affected by it, and its diversity of news, humor, lifestyle reporting, and music. Featured in the documentary were many of the BBC's literary voices, including H.G. Wells, G.K. Chesterton, J.B. Priestley, and George Bernard Shaw. 8.5 x 6.5 inches. Near Fine.

One with the stamp of a Canadian film distributor on the verso, and three with handwritten ink annotations noting production No. 78-740 on the bottom right corner of the recto. A collection of interviews regarding (and dramatizations of) people's near-death experiences, focusing on visions of the Christian afterlife. A low-budget film which received limited release, mainly in drive-in movie theaters in smaller towns and rural areas. Shot on location in Park City, Salt Lake City, and Heber, Utah. 10 x 8 inches. A low-budget film which received limited release, mainly in drive-in movie theaters in smaller towns and rural areas. Shot on location in Park City, Salt Lake City, and Heber, Utah. Approximately 8 x 10 inches. Four Very Good plus, one Very Good, with pinholes to the top edge and light ink residue on the center of the image.

A documentary capturing the first performance of an all-black rodeo in Harlem and the varied audience reactions to seeing African Americans participating in what was widely considered a white sport. Full-color illustrated pocketed folder, containing five black and white photographs, and three pages of promotional reading material. A documentary following the star-studded 1969 Big Sur Folk Festival, which featured Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, and many others. Shot on location in Big Sur. Universal City: Universal Studios, 1987. Vintage promotional photograph of director Taylor Hackford from the 1987 film. Provenance stamp of collector, historian, and author "Frank Driggs" on verso. Hackford's documentary of two 1986 concerts on October 16, 1986 at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis, celebrating Chuck Berry's 60th birthday. Featuring performances and interviews with a multitude of musicians, spanning musical genres and generations, including Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Robert Cray, Linda Ronstadt, Etta James, Steve Jordan, and others. Set in and shot on location in the Fox Theater, St. Louis, Missouri. 8 x 10 inches. Near Fine.

N.p.: N.p., 1972. Vintage borderless reference photograph of Michelangelo Antonioni on the set of the 1972 film. Cropping annotations in manuscript pencil and "Collection" stamp, obscured, struck with manuscript pencil, on verso. In 1972, during China's Cultural Revolution, Antonioni was invited by the People's Republic of China to direct a documentary on the "New China." The final film, at 220 minutes, was divided into three parts. The first focusing on Beijing, the second Suzhou, and the third Shanghai. In each section Antonioni focuses primarily on the faces of the people. Mao Zedong was reportedly so displeased with the film Antonioni was charged with being anti-Chinese and counterrevolutionary. Shot on location in Beijing, Henan, Jiangsu, and Shanghai, China. 6.75 x 10 inches. Very Good plus, with very light creasing and a tiny bruise on mid right edge.

Collection of 17 vintage reference photographs from promotional films about the British General Post Office (GPO), likely produced by the GPO Film Unit. 15 with stamps specific to a film's UK release on the verso, 5 with mimeo snipes, and several with handwritten ink annotations. From the collection of noted British film producer John Palmer. The GPO served as the state postal system and telecommunications carrier of the UK from 1660 until 1969, when it was replaced by The Post Office. The GPO Film Unit was created in 1933, taking on the responsibilities of the Empire Marketing Board Film Unit, and was later renamed the Crown Film Unit during World War II, when it was integrated into the Ministry of Information. From the collection of film historian Joel Finler. A documentary about the Cuban revolution, told through interviews with activists, workers, students, and others. Co-director Adolfas Mekas was the brother of Jonas Mekas, a film critic, filmmaker, and essentially father figure of the avant-garde New American Cinema of the 1960s, which in turn spawned the underground film movement that continued into the 1970s. N.p.: N.p., 1972. Vintage borderless satin-finish double-weight reference photograph from the 1972 documentary film, showing musicians George Harrison and Bob Dylan performing together. One of the first large-scale humanitarian aid rock concerts, The Concert for Bangladesh featured a plethora of 1960s pop and rock musicians performing to raise relief funds for the refugees of the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War-related genocide, spearheaded by Harrison and Indian sitar player Ravi Shankar. The event was filmed in its entirety, as well as made into a successful album by Apple Corps, but performance rights and tax issues led to funds raised from the film and album (speculated to total anywhere from $8 to 10 million) being held in an IRS escrow account for over a decade. Shot on location over two days at Madison Square Garden in New York. 9.5 x 7 inches. Near Fine.

Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox, 1972. Vintage black-and-white double weight still photograph from the 1972 film, featuring a wailing George Harrison playing his guitar. Harrison arranged a concert to benefit the people of Bangladesh (at the behest of Ravi Shankar), and staged the show in New York's Madison Square Garden in 1971. Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Ravi Shankar, and many others performed alongside Harrison, and it is considered one of the first foreign-aid benefit concerts. 7 x 9.25 inches, with no borders as issued. London: London Film, 1953. Vintage program for the German release of the 1953 British film. Text and titles in German. A documentary about the famous, successful Everest expedition mounted by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary, the first climbers to reach its peak. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary. 7.25 x 10.5 inches. Bifold. Near Fine.

N.p.: Veriscope, 1897. Two vintage fragments from a 63mm film print of the 1897 boxing match between "Gentleman" Jim Corbett and Bob Fitzsimmons. The first fragment consists of six frames depicting the fighters in a clinch, while the second consists of four frames depicting the fighters in the center of the ring about to trade punches. At over 100 minutes, the film is the first feature length release anywhere, and, with an aspect ratio of 1.65:1, the first widescreen film ever produced. Though fragments such as this survive, the film in its entirety is considered lost. A five frame fragment is held the National Media Museum in the UK, and approximately 19 minutes are available for viewing, but OCLC locates no fragments in institutions. The heavy weight title bout took place on March 17, 1897 in Carson City, Nevada, which legalized boxing specifically to host this fight, beginning the long and storied relationship between the Silver State and the sweet science. Documentary by famed German gay activist and filmmaker Rosa von Praunheim, about the ill-conceived and short lived "Death" magazine, founded by "Screw" magazine founder and publisher Al Goldstein. Goldstein, who reveled in his sleaze image, launched his most outrageous publication, "Death" magazine, in 1979, but a tasteless, squalid magazine on the subject was a hard sell, and folded after four issues. 23.5 x 33.25 inches. With printed mimeo snipes specific to the film's 1971 UK release affixed to the verso, along with a provenance stamp. An in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at professional roller derby, most notably interviewing Ann Calvello and Charlie O'Connell, two of the highest-performing derby champions in the 1970s. Shot on location in New York and Ohio. 8 x 10 inches. Very Good, some with light creasing and fading, and light dampstaining to the top edges.

Los Angeles: American Film Institute [AFI], 1972. Two vintage studio still photographs, one borderless with a bottom margin, and one with a wide bottom margin, of Peter Bogdanovich and John Ford, from the 1971 film. One with a mimeo snipe on verso, for the 9th New York Film Festival, the film's US premiere. Bogdanovich's documentary on the life and films of he seminal director, interviewing the notoriously obstinate man himself, as well as some of his most famous actors, notably Henry Fonda, James Stewart, and John Wayne. Affording the rights to the clips, however, exhausted the film's AFI funding, resulting in the film being rarely shown, and then only in non-profit venues. In 2006 Bogdanovich, having been dissatisfied with the initial version, re-edited and included additional interviews with actors and directors, including Clint Eastwood, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and Walter Hill. 8 x 10 inches.
