Its overture was first known as "Lustspiel," or "Comedy Overture," and is considered the gem of the work. The story of the opera is a simple one. Hans, the step-son of the peasant Micha, after being driven from home, returns and falls in love with Marenka. Her mother consents to the proposal of Kezal, the marriage broker, that she shall marry Wenzel, Hans half-brother. Then the broker offers a bribe to Hans if he will abandon his claim. Hans agrees provided Marenka will marry "the son of Micha." Marenka is grieved at the seeming abandonment, but at last Hans reveals himself and all are happy. Kranzberg, Germany: Pilz CD, 1992. Bela Bartok was one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century who lived from 1881-1945. He is often thought of as Hungary's national composer since he used so many traditional songs and tunes in his compositions. His period of greatest composition was from 1907 until 1940. In that year he both learned he had leukemia and had to leave Hungry for the US due to the rise of Nazism. This CD contains 15 Hungarian Peasant Songs; 20 Pieces for Children; 5 Dances from Rumania; and Allegro Barbarco. Total playing time: 47:11. Cd has a few tiny fine scratches which does not affect the quality or function of the recordings. Crystal case has a few light scratches. Includes the original CD, case, and artwork insert. Scarce..
