Exhibition catalogue of 239 items to mark the opening of the collection, illustrating Japan in the Edo period and its connections to the outside world. Each item illustrated in colour, with detailed captions in Japanese, many with accompanying English text. Minor bumps to tips, light wear, still a very firm, sound copy.

Bar some slight bumps to tips of Vol V, all volumes in superb condition, with barely any signs of use, if at all. Wrangham was born into a wealthy English landowning family. His uncle, William Winkworth, and grandfather Stephen Winkworth, were both experts in Oriental arts, the latter among the co-founders of the Oriental Ceramic Society. Against this backdrop, he was to amass one of the great collections of Japanese material, especially strong in inro, lacquerware, and netsuke. Part IV is unusual in that it retains the dust jacket, which seems to have been issued only for this volume. Several pieces set record prices for the time, many of which still stand. Numerous b&w illustrations. Wear to covers and edges, covers darkened, minor stain to front cover, short 1" closed tear or snag to rear cover. Internally clean and unmarked, binding firm.

With the laid in folded map inserted to rear, intact. Signed by Cortazzii to half title. Author was UK ambassador to Japan from 1980–84, President of the Asiatic Society of Japan, 1982–1983, and Chairman of the Japan Society of London, 1985–95. A significant work it remains a required resource on the subject. Lavishly produced, with 59 fine colour plates, the rest monochrome, of historically significant maps of Japan, by Japanese and Western cartographers, some folding. Page edges slightly darkened, slight spotting to top page edges, minor signs of handling to jacket w/ small nibbles around head of spine, some fade to spine and adjacent areas, still a very bright copy, binding firm.

Brown moire pattern cloth, black lettered title to spine, faded gilt title to cover. pp. 249, w numerous b&w, one fold out and some col. plates. Lightly rubbed to tips, offsetting to endpapers, slightly bowed text block. Previous owner has neatly affixed front panel of jacket to front pastedown. Internally, a clean copy, binding firm.
