THE ROAD TO KHARTOUM: A LIFE of GENERAL CHARLES GORDON by Charles C. Trench - 1989

This is a trade paperback copy of The Road to Khartoum, A Life of General Charles Gordon, by the British Indian Army officer and historian Charles Chenevix Trench. It was originally published in 1978. The New York Times Review of Books called in "a rich and judicious biography, an incredible tale."

Major-General Gordon (1833-1885) aka Chinese Gordon, was the British army officer who commanded the 'Ever Victorious Army', which regularly defeated much larger forces to put down the Taiping Rebellion. He was extraordinarily charismatic and his men endured appalling hardships to follow him to Palestine, South Africa, and the Sudan. He ended up as commander of the English garrison at Khartoum, where he was murdered by Muslim fundamentalists. His life is a fascinating story.
