The Xhosa chief Hintza was shot while trying to escape and his body was later mutilated by relic hunters among the settler provisionals pursuing him. D'Urban correctly assessing 'the hold the canting party would make of it in England' attempted to justify this quasi-judicial murder on the ground that Hintsa was 'a most irreclaimable and treacherous villain'. His use of the word 'irreclaimable' proved injudicious, bringing down on him the full fury of the evangelicals in England. One of the two fine coloured maps 'marked with assegais shows the extent of the invasion which covered the country with blood and ashes'.

Cathcart was killed in battle at Inkermann, and this book which is based largely on his official correspondence appears to have been a labour of love by his widow. He took over the conduct of the Eighth Frontier War after Earl Grey secured the dismissal of Harry Smith. His strategy consisted of building 'castles' along the top of the Waterkloof and wearing down the Xhosa by persistent close patrols of the Amatolas. This earned him the contempt of the colonials who preferred Harry Smith's more gung-ho approach. They nicknamed him 'Boots' Cathcart on account of the fine hip-length boots that he habitually wore. A4 display book containing the originals listed above, one other original photo, and many other materials relating to Aldworth's death at Paardeberg and the four memorials to him at Truro, Dorking, Cheltenham and Paardeberg. Colonel Aldworth was killed in action on 18th February 1900 while leading 2nd Battalion Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry in an attack on the Boer entrenchments. He had served for many years in the Bedfordshire Regiment.

Pretoria: without imprint, 1900. A fine set of all 17 issues of this Boer War newspaper preserved in a specially made black leather solander box. Each 4 pages and folded as issued. The Pretoria Friend was started by Lord Stanley, the chief British censor, at Pretoria during the early days of British occupation when the city was still under martial law. It was edited by Lt the Hon J Ward.
