Description:
London: Smith Elder, 1843. xxx and 575 pages.12 plates. A good copy in the publisher's salmon cloth with the regimental crest in gold on the front board and a stand of arms in gold on the spine; the headcap is chipped and there is a small tear and other minor wear to the outer hinges, but the binding is still entirely sound; the covers are slightly soiled and there is an untidy shelf reference at the base of the spine (see photo 1), there is occasional foxing, at its worst on the titlepage (see photo 4).
Perkins page 386. Brigadier Neill was killed in action at Lucknow in 1857. He has a district in Delhi and an island in the Andamans named after him. This excellent history includes a 77 page account of the regiment's part in the First Burma War.
In 1862, after the demise of the East India Company, the regiment was taken on to the establishment of the British Army as the 102nd (Royal Madras) Regiment of Fusiliers. In 1881 this regiment became the 1st Battalion of The Royal Dublin Fusiliers.
