Albany: Joel Munsell's Sons, 1887. viii and 412 pages. Frontispiece portrait of Burgoyne, sketch of the colours of the 53rd. Small 4to. Publisher's diced maroon cloth, bookplate of the 85th Regiment officers mess, no stamps or markings, an excellent copy in the original cloth.
Good account of Burgoyne's campaign. The main body of the 53rd was left to garrison Fort Ticonderoga, but the flank companies went on with Burgoyne, and Digby, who commanded the Grenadier Company, was with the army to the bitter end at Saratoga. This copy has the bookplate of the Officers Mess, 85th King's Light Infantry. The 85th had been linked with the 53rd under the Cardwell reforms to form the new county regiment, the King's Shropshire Light Infantry. The bookplate is mute commentary on the relationship of the two old regiments in the early years of the new regiment. Neuchatel: without imprint, 1779. 2 volumes. 320 pages; 279 pages. 9 extending folding plates. Half calf with cloth sides, spines compartmented in gold; light marginal browning, a near fine pair. The target of this magisterial refutation was F de Graindorge d'Orgeville baron de Menil-Durand whose own 'difficile et diffuse tactique' had been tested in 1775 at Bayeux by troops under the command of Marshal de Broglie.

La Haye: Guillaume de Voys, 1606 (as misprinted on the titlepage but really 1706). xvi including titlepage and 144 pages. Complete as first issued with 13 plates on 11 sheets (the plate for page 19 is on the same sheet as that for page 36, likewise those for pages 86 and 96 - see photo). Contemporary calf; covers slightly worn; some browning. Mainly on artillery but dealing also with petards and mines.

Paris: Jombert, 1754. 2 volumes. xix and 371 pages; viii and 351 pages. Small 8vo. A fine pair in half calf gilt with cloth sides. A complete practical treatise for the serving infantry officer dealing with discipline and supply in the first volume and tactics and siegecraft in the second.

Paris: chez L Cellot, 1785. 2 volumes. ii and 496 pages; ii and 456 pages. 17 folding plates. Handsomely bound in contemporary tree calf with gilt compartmented spines.

London: J Millan, 1767 second edition. 32 pages. 32 plates coloured by hand on 20 sheets many of which are folding. Later full calf. The second edition was much enlarged. Houlding comments 'This small drill book laid out a series of manoeuvres for the battalion, most of which were described in the 1764 Regulations, but which were here performed in a fashion more sophisticated than that laid down in the regulations.'

London: Longman Brown, 1853. 2 volumes bound in 1. 261 pages and 295 pages. Full green calf; scuff mark on the front board, corners a little bumped, nevertheless an attractive copy. Presented to R C Grosvenor on his leaving Eton.Commander of the British forces in Spain during the War of the Spanish Succession.

London: T Becket, 1769 first edition. 336 pages. 12mo. Recently rebound in quarter calf, new endpapers; the margins are a little tight and there is a small paper flaw on the titlepage. The University of London library copy, previously owned by Professor M S Anderson. 'The Earl of Crawford's History' on the Turkish War of 1738 was heavily edited by Henry Kopp who later financed Richard Rolt's Memoirs of Crawford published in 1753.

London: Jacob Robinson, 1758. 76 pages. A fine copy in later half calf and marbled boards. Conway was second in command to Sir John Mordant in the ineffectual Rochefort Expedition. This was his response to a pamphlet by 'a country author' who was Sir Thomas Potter MP.

Brussels: Francois Foppens, second edition , 1724. xxx and 272 pages. 3 folding woodcuts. Contemporary calf; the raised bands on the spine are slightly rubbed; the title label is missing and an ink title has been substituted. First published in Paris in 1723. Several later editions claim to be the second edition. This pirate edition, although it was next to be published after the first edition, was certainly neither authorised nor reviewed by the author. During the War of the Spanish Succession, Folard served under Vendome in Italy and at Malplaquet where he was wounded. On the conclusion of peace he enlisted under Charles XII of Sweden for whom he developed an exagerated respect. He appears to have read Polybius at his mentor's suggestion. He combined Polybius' ideas about phalanx warfare with the Swedish king's doctrine of shock to suggest that the thin firing lines of the 18th Century could be bested by dense masses of troops advancing in column. Engraved titlepage, 4 double page leaves numbered 1-4 listing by name officers ranked major and above, 24 double page leaves numbered 1-24 showing the succession of colonels and the names of the regiments in order of precedence, 4 double page leaves numbered 37-40 being the index to the army. 18th Century marbled boards rebacked in leather to match the existing corners, inserted ms notes and many ink corrections and annotations in the text, the page edges ragged but without loss. Apparently originally bound like this, omitting the Royal Navy section and adding the army list.
