A little waviness to pages, but no damage (likely from just not being stored flat) . Very light edge/corner wear to cover. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 400 pages; "Though most casual fans know the story of hip-hop's birth in the ashes of the South Bronx, the story of the South's entry into the modern rap scene remains relatively unknown. Here, author and music writer Sarig (The Secret History of Rock) provides the "Dirty South" its first complete history, an ambitious tale featuring Southern industry luminaries like Pharrell Williams and Jermaine Dupri, as well as the acts mentioned in the subtitle. Sarig's chronicle boasts remarkable depth and breadth, covering every aspect of Southern hip-hop, including dozens-if not hundreds-of acts. Moving away from historical documentation to analysis can lead Sarig to make some questionable generalizations ("it's easy to observe that, today, the blues is almost entirely the province of middle-aged white people") , but his attention to the music itself reaches some dizzying pinnacles-as in deconstructing crunk lyrics to reveal connections to 11th century working-class Saxons. Throughout, Sarig is informative and entertaining, keeping an eye on the big picture while managing this huge swath of uncollected music history; though the necessary surfeit of details may wear out casual readers, Sarig ably connects the stories of record shops, roller discos and street corners from Houston to Miami to Virginia Beach." Four Pianos: Three Evenings of Music by Steve Reich at Park Place Gallery in New York City (Original poster for the 1967 performance) by Reich, Steve (composer, performer); Max Neuhaus (composer, performer); Philip Corner, Jon Gibson, Arthur Murphy, James Tenney (performers)

New York: Park Place Gallery, 1967. Poster advertising an early performance by Steve Reich at Park Place Gallery in New York on March 17, 18, and 19, 1967, also featuring Max Neuhaus performing and "distributing" a new piece called "BI-PRODUCT" (currently listed on Neuhaus' website as "By-Product," in contravenance of the poster). In 1967 Steve Reich wrote a prototype piece, "Slow Motion Sound" that involved two separate pairs of hands clapping out of phase and coming into phase over the course of 144 bars. Though it was the foundation of all his work that would follow, it was not recorded until 1994 (by Chris Hughes). Reich worked the same concept into his first "traditional" piece, "Four Organs" in 1970.This performance represents a bridge between "Slow Motion Sound" and "Four Organs," only conceived as "Four Pianos" instead. "Four Pianos" was never formally recorded, only performed. Texas composer Max Neuhaus was in the 1960s a renowned percussionist and interpreter of contemporary music who at this point was moving toward his ultimate identity as a pioneer of artistic work in sound, and would become one of the innovators of sound works and the concept of sound installations. Blue card stock with printing in black, 7 x 10 inches (18 x 25.5 cm). Near Fine with just a touch of fading at the edges.
