J.M. Dent and Sons Ltd, London, 1930. Second Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Fair Condition/No Dust Jacket. So many elementary text-books of Geology are available that it seems almost superfluous to add to the number. Geology, however, is a science embracing, not only general principles of world-wide importance, but the application of those principles to the working-out of the history of a given locality or country. In this work the general principles of geology are illustrated, as far as possible, by Canadian examples, and the geology of Canada is given especial prominence in the section devoted to Historical Geology. This method of treatment introduces the student to the subject by reference to localities and geological structures with which he is familiar and lays a local foundation on which the greater geological history of the whole world may be built. While the book is primarily intended as an introduction to general geology, the emphasis laid on Canadian geological history makes it suitable t ... Read more

Peterhouse 1284 - 1984 An Architectural Record

The Masters & Fellows Of Peterhouse, Cambridge, 1984. First Edition. Softcover. Near Fine Condition/No Dust Jacket. This architectural record of Peterhouse is published by the college in celebration of the seven-hundredth anniversary of its foundation. It is not intended as a history of the college nor as a picture of life in it in the 1980s, but simply as a photographic survey of its architecturally or historically memorable features. The photographs were specially taken for the book on a series of visits to the college in 1982-3 by Mr A. F. Kersting, the leading architectural photographer. The Master and Fellows are grateful to him for providing what is probably the fullest architectural survey that has ever been published of an Oxford or Cambridge college. The photographs are unusual for recording the interiors of some of the historic rooms used by Fellows and undergraduates. These are rarely included in histories of colleges. Another novel feature is that the photographs show the college in its s ... Read more

Pan Books Ltd, London, 1984. First Edition. Softcover. As New/No Dust Jacket. In 1980, A. K. Dewdney, a professor of Computer Science, assigned his students the exercise of simulating a two-dimensional world on the computer. The class, inspired by Flatland, a 19th century novel depicting life in a flat world, went far beyond the wildest dreams of its author, Edwin Abbott, an English clergyman. Where Abbott had conjured up a rather simplistic world with almost no indication of its physical laws, Dewdney and his students designed a complete working world, a computer-planet swimming through a plane, interstellar space somewhere within the electronic bowels of the computer. This planet was inhabited by a race of beings , the FEC's, who lived underground and hunted throgs for a living. Then one day in May 1980 something extraordinary happened. One of the FEC's began to use a word not in the computer's vocabulary. YNDRD. Their imaginary planet had somehow fallen into step with a real, two-dimension ... Read more

Letters of H. E. Luxmoore

A. B. (editor]) Ramsay

  • Edition: First Edition
  • Book condition: Very Good Condition
  • Quantity available: 1
Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1929. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Printed for private circulation these are the letters of an Eton house master to his old boys and associates. Luxmoore was known to all at Eton through his life, for both his mind and character & as well as for his appearance. The best and wisest loved and admired him. Austere he was to himself and austere he could look to others but, as he wrote, it took one small boy only a week to find him out and describe him in a letter home as " harmlessly awful." The real man was generosity itself. The letters are edited by Allen Beville Ramsay, Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge, 1925-47 with the assistance of M. R. James, writer of ghost stories (who also wrote the preface to this book), & C. R . L. Fletcher, the English historian, all three of whom were tutored by Luxmoore at Eton College. Following the M. R. James preface is a brief biography; a short of thanks to ... Read more

Ross Institute of Tropical Hygiene, London, 1948. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/No Dust Jacket. Foreword, Preface & detailed Contents list to the front. The importance of Dr. Gilroy's work in the neighbourhood of Lagos is fully accredited by the success it has achieved, and its value emphasized by the words of Sir Hubert Walker, Director of Public Works at the time: "It may therefore truly be said that the value of the work to the war effort, the general health of Lagos and as a guide to similar work in future is incalculable." The details of Dr. Gilroy 's work refer to Lagos and its vicinity. The principles apply to any part of the world where dangerous anophelines breed in coastal swamps. In other places, however, variations in tidal level and other local conditions may affect the precise form which drainage should assume. These local variations should be fully enquired into and allowed for in preparing plans elsewhere. Size: Octavo (standard boo ... Read more

With Sikorski to Russia

Major V. A. Cazalet

  • Edition: First Edition
  • Book condition: Very Good Condition
  • Quantity available: 1
Curwen Press, London, 1942. First Edition. Softcover. Very Good Condition. Printed for private circulation & limited to 300 copies; from the author's preface: "The object of our trip was to visit the Polish Brigade in Tobruk and then go on to Russia to see how the Polish-Soviet Agreement of July 29, I94I, was working. I went with General Sikorski as Political Liaison Officer between Mr. Churchill and himself - at least that is the rather vague, unpaid and unofficial capacity in which General Sikorski has always regarded my job. Our party consisted of Joseph Retinger, the General's confidential adviser and lifelong friend, General Klimecki, Chief of the Staff, Colonel Protasiewicz, who looked into and after the various military questions which came up during our trip, and Lieutenant Count Tyszkiewicz, the General's A. D. C. In spite of some quite trying experiences, we never had a word of disagreement between us. For colleagues and companions on a long journey I could not have had mor ... Read more

privately published, Fordingbridge, Hampshire, 1968. First Thus. Softcover (Saddle-stapled). Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. In September 1942, a farmer found a quantity of oyster shells while digging out a ferret. Although there was no surface evidence, and no record or legend of anything unusual at the site a trial trench was opened. At 18 inches a mosaic floor was found. Owing to weather conditions, no further excavation was possible till the spring of 1943, when weekend work allowed for further investigation. Rooms I and II were found together with a small rubbish heap in the angle of the rooms. A grid of trial holes 25 feet apart laid down during the summer of 1944, gave evidence of an extensive building or buildings and it was decided to suspend excavation until I had more leisure to plot a definite plan and had purchased the land. Work has been continuous each summer since 1956. It is now certain that the Villa was a large estate mansion and that a habitation existed here from early in the 1st Cen ... Read more

Thames & Hudson, London, 1976. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Near Fine. Matthew Arnold was the Victorian writer who left the most lasting mark on British society: his incessant campaigning, in books and articles and reports, paved the way for the national system of secondary education created by the great Education Act of 1902. His urbanity and good manners did not conceal his refusal to subscribe to Victorian assumption: he was a public figure - and a great public servant, with his feet firmly on the ground of all the pavements he trod as an inspector of schools. Dr. Rowse has the new suggestion to make, and a new approach to offer, in his view that Arnold's poetry owed much to the Celtic temperament of his mother's side of the family: gaiety and sparkle on the surface, an inner melancholy and pessimism below. One sees this even in the poems addressed to the unknown Marguerite, with whom he had the major emotional experience of his life. Other poems, as well ... Read more

Thames & Hudson, London, 1975. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/Near Fine. Forty years ago, when young, A. L. Rowse first contemplated writing a life of Swift; now, in the mature reflections of a great scholar, we have a major biography, at once hugely readable, highly instructive and acutely relevant to our time. Swift's long life - he was born in 1667 and died in 1745 provides a superb picture of the period, in which all the great issues, political and religious, social and intellectual, are vividly represented. The masterpiece of his early career, ‘A Tale of a Tub’, proved a time-bomb that showed he cared more for literary fame even than preferment in church or state. From first to last he was a writer, true to his own genius - a genius that found its fullest expression in ‘Gulliver's Travels’: the most penetrating satire written upon human society and upon man himself. Here, as elsewhere, we see how Swift speaks, in the most direct and pro ... Read more

Gale & Polden, Aldershot, Hampshire, 1941. 6th Edition . Hardcover. Fine Condition/No Dust Jacket. green end-papers; written primarily for the Royal Air Force but equally applicable to the Army; Every officer is expected to obey certain unwritten laws. There are no regulations or written instructions to assist the newly commissioned officer in most of these matters. If he seeks guidance from those in authority over him, he usually receives the unsatisfactory reply that this is " done" or " not done" because it is the " Custom of the Service." He is liable to make many unfortunate mistakes before he learns from experience the numerous unwritten customs he is expected to comply with. This small book is intended to assist those officers who have been commissioned from the ranks or direct from civil life, few of whom will have had any experience of, or opportunity of studying, " Service etiquette" or " Customs of the Service." Edinburgh University Press, Edinburgh, 1973. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Very Good. brown end-papers with map of Scotland (1785) & facing description; preface, contents & illustrations list to the front. This carefully documented study attempts to correct the popular historical fallacy that almost everything significant in Scottish history occurred before the end of 1746. The departure of Prince Charles Edward was followed in the Highlands by eighty turbulent years of social and economic change, years in which governments, landowners and political economists strove to bring about economic development among a people whom they regarded as barbarous and uncivilised. In this admirably dispassionate account, Professor Youngson relates the problems - of population, communications, agriculture, industry - along with their proposed solutions, to the wider discussion of economic policy in the works of Hume, Anderson and Adam Smith. This, then, is the story of the large ... Read more

  • Quantity available: 1
Penguin, Harmondsworth, Middlesex, 1949. First Edition. Softcover. Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Penguin Classics No. L13; Manon Lescaut is a story of an upper-class young man, Chevalier Des Grieux, who falls in love with a lower-class young woman, Manon Lescaut. They run away together without getting married, and Des Grieux discovers that Manon’s love of luxury is greater than her desire to stay faithful. Manon takes a wealthy lover, which upsets and angers Des Grieux, although this leads to him and Manon tricking him out of some money and enables them to live in luxury before they are ruined. This storyline repeats itself three times, with each fallout greater and with more lasting consequences than the one before. Fourth Estate, London, 1992. First Edition. Brown Cloth. Very Good/Good. black titles spine; "Culture - there can be few words whose meaning has undergone such radical revision in recent years. Once a term suggestive of exclusion and elitism, British culture has descended from the Leavisian and Reithian heights that it formerly occupied. Culture now encompasses all the various codes and practices by which our society constructs its own self-image. Tee-shirt motifs and BT commercials, the Gulf war as seen by CNN and the Gulf war as seen by Jean Baudrillard, Martin Amis's Time's Arrow and J.R. Hartley's Fly-Fishing, Pee- Wee Herman and pop groups' names, Benetton and Brecht - all of these, whether proper 'art' or not, are certainly what we think of, in the postmodern world of the nineties, as culture. In this brilliantly entertaining collection of articles, the novelist and critic Gilbert Adair forges a path through the labyrinth of what he calls the culture industry, and in a ... Read more
