Description:
J.M. Dent and Sons Ltd, London, 1930. Second Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Fair Condition/No Dust Jacket. So many elementary text-books of Geology are available that it seems almost superfluous to add to the number. Geology, however, is a science embracing, not only general principles of world-wide importance, but the application of those principles to the working-out of the history of a given locality or country. In this work the general principles of geology are illustrated, as far as possible, by Canadian examples, and the geology of Canada is given especial prominence in the section devoted to Historical Geology. This method of treatment introduces the student to the subject by reference to localities and geological structures with which he is familiar and lays a local foundation on which the greater geological history of the whole world may be built. While the book is primarily intended as an introduction to general geology, the emphasis laid on Canadian geological history makes it…

Description:
Ross Institute of Tropical Hygiene, London, 1948. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/No Dust Jacket. Foreword, Preface & detailed Contents list to the front. The importance of Dr. Gilroy's work in the neighbourhood of Lagos is fully accredited by the success it has achieved, and its value emphasized by the words of Sir Hubert Walker, Director of Public Works at the time: "It may therefore truly be said that the value of the work to the war effort, the general health of Lagos and as a guide to similar work in future is incalculable." The details of Dr. Gilroy 's work refer to Lagos and its vicinity. The principles apply to any part of the world where dangerous anophelines breed in coastal swamps. In other places, however, variations in tidal level and other local conditions may affect the precise form which drainage should assume. These local variations should be fully enquired into and allowed for in preparing plans elsewhere. Size: Octavo…

Description:
privately published, Fordingbridge, Hampshire, 1968. First Thus. Softcover (Saddle-stapled). Good Condition. In September 1942, a farmer found a quantity of oyster shells while digging out a ferret. Although there was no surface evidence, and no record or legend of anything unusual at the site a trial trench was opened. At 18 inches a mosaic floor was found. Owing to weather conditions, no further excavation was possible till the spring of 1943, when weekend work allowed for further investigation. Rooms I and II were found together with a small rubbish heap in the angle of the rooms. A grid of trial holes 25 feet apart laid down during the summer of 1944, gave evidence of an extensive building or buildings and it was decided to suspend excavation until I had more leisure to plot a definite plan and had purchased the land. Work has been continuous each summer since 1956. It is now certain that the Villa was a large estate mansion and that a habitation existed here from early in the 1st Century…

Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1965. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/No Dust Jacket. Illustrator: Sybil J. Roles. Titles & preface to front; this is Volume four of a five volume set of illustrations of Flora of the British Isles drawn by Sybil J. Roles. These volumes illustrate the Clapham-Tutin-Warburg Flora of the British Isles. The drawings assist users of the Flora to recognise species by supplying a visual supplement to the text. They are from fresh specimens and deliberately aim to give an impression of the living plant. As the compilers of the Flora put it, 'The intention is to provide a visual impression so as to assist with the appreciation of the technical descriptions given in Flora of the British Isles and the Excursion Flora'. The degree to which the illustrations planned to supplement the Flora itself greatly increases their value. We also have for sale a copy of volume three. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.…

Penguin, Harmondsworth, Middlesex, 1949. First Edition. Softcover. Very Good Condition. Penguin Classics No. L13; Manon Lescaut is a story of an upper-class young man, Chevalier Des Grieux, who falls in love with a lower-class young woman, Manon Lescaut. They run away together without getting married, and Des Grieux discovers that ManonÂs love of luxury is greater than her desire to stay faithful. Manon takes a wealthy lover, which upsets and angers Des Grieux, although this leads to him and Manon tricking him out of some money and enables them to live in luxury before they are ruined. This storyline repeats itself three times, with each fallout greater and with more lasting consequences than the one before. The novella ends tragically and without much hope, although there is a ray of light in Des GrieuxÂs decision to pursue the moral road again. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. 190 pages. Description:
Butter Field Books, Old Isleworth, Middlesex, 1986. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). As New/Near Fine. A description of the daily private life of a great Leader is valuable only to the degree that the eyewitness is both intimate and honest. There have been so many conflicting accounts of the life of Mary Baker Eddy, accounts varying from the cloyingly adoring and suspect to the viciously hostile and demonstrably untrue, that to come across an absolutely straightforward record of the last days of the great 'Revelator ' of Christian Science is a rewarding experience. In Adam Dickey we are fortunate in finding someone whose transparent sincerity and whose love for 'Mother' illuminates every page. Here is the ideal witness; his naiveté of approach, his utter unawareness that he may be providing ammunition for the irreverent, testify to his honesty. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. xlvi + 54. Binding is tight, covers and…
