Description:
Copenhagen: Gyldendals Forlagstrykerri. Near Fine. 1967. Paperback. Gyldendals julebog 1967; 99 pages; Clean and secure in plain wrappers in pictorial dustjacket. Illustrations. Text in Danish. Dyveke was a "commoner", the daughter of the Dutch merchant Sigbrit Willoms, who lived in Bergen in Norway. Dyveke became the mistress to Christian II of Denmark in 1507 or 1509. They met in Bergen, and Christian took Dyveke with him to Oslo, where he was regent, and to Copenhagen, when he became king in 1513. Their relationship has been the inspiration of many poets but in fact little is known about it. Kjeld Abell (1901 – 1961) was a Danish playwright, screenwriter, and theatrical designer. Born in Ribe, Denmark, Abell's first designs were seen in ballets directed by George Balanchine at Copenhagen's Royal Danish Theatre and London's Alhambra Theatre. Perhaps he is the first consequent modernist among Danish playwrights with his use of a flash back Chinese box system… Read More

Vilna [Vilnius, Lithuania]: Rom - Bi-defus ha-almanah yehe-ahim Rom. Good. 1890. Hardcover. 2 vols. pages; Contemporary half pebbled dark brown morocco over black cloth. Considerable wear and rubbing to the corners, both backstrips now lost. Two volume edition of Isaac Aboab's Menorat ha-Maor, the great household book of medieval Jews. This two volume edition also has the commentary and Yiddish version of Moses Frankfurter [1672-1762] -- Nefesh Yehudah. The volumes were printed in Vilnius, Lithuania -- a major Jewish center at the time of publication. There are title pages in Hebrew and Russian (both detached and worn in the margins), followed by title pages entirely in Hebrew. 324; 328 pp. (After the Holocaust, Vilnius has a Jewish population of about half of one percent; books like this one certainly suffered a similar catastrophic decline in fortune). The provenance of our set is interesting. Leopold Strouse, the Baltimore philanthropist gave these volumes to Johns… Read More

In 1921 the artist met pioneer of abstract dance Rudolf von Laban, "with whom he entered into a vivid discussion about dance notation and counterpoint, inspiring Ackermann to rhythmic blind paintings".[3] Throughout the 1920s he worked as an artist in Stuttgart, where his first one-man show was held in 1924, featuring figurative and abstract… Read More

A Philadelphie: none listed. Good. 1823. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. [4], iv, 112 pages; Contemporary, probably original binding: calf-backed marbled paper-covered boards. Significant wear to the binding, sewing compromised, considerable foxing throughout -- but a complete copy of this rare American edition of an Aesop's fables, in French quatrains. Title page states: "Nouvelle edition dédié a la jeunesse." There is a dedication (in verse quatrains) to youth, page [3], signed with initials at the bottom -- "F. M." ["A LA JEUNESSE"] The French text appears to the version of Jean-Baptiste Morvan de Bellegarde. The statement of a price in "sous" on the title page is odd, but one noted library holding a copy of this rare edition helps confirm that this "Philadelphie" stated in the imprint is the city in Pennsylvania; the American Antiquarian Society copy states in their catalogue entry: "Place: United States;… Read More
