Description:
Headquarters, near Richmond, Virginia, 4 Dec. 1864. 8vo (9" x 5.75"), 4 pp., in ink, on plain paper. CONDITION: Paper browned, text faded but legible, some words barely legible but no loss of sense. An engaging letter written by a Confederate Second Sergeant from Texas to a sweetheart on a range of subjects relating to the Civil War, both Northern and Southern. J. M. Adams enlisted as a private in Company C of the 4th Texas Infantry Regiment in Robertson County, TX on 15 July 1861. He served as a scout in the Fall of 1861; saw action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 Sept. 1862; was promoted to Second Sergeant; undertook provost guard in April 1863; was wounded in action at the Battle of Wilderness on 6 May 1864, and was paroled at Appomattox in 1865. At some point during the war Adams committed an offense mentioned in this letter, but which he does not disclose. Adams addresses this letter to Ms. Belle Hixson, "an esteemed friend," who appears to have lived in Aldie, Yoakum County, TX and from… Read More

Description:
[No place, no date, but London, 1766]. Etching, 9.25 " x 13.5" at neat line, surmounting 3 columns of letterpress on a 11.5" x 14" sheet of laid paper. Handsomely and appropriately framed. Important and scarce political cartoon lampooning the repeal of the Stamp Act under the administration of George Grenville, Prime Minister from 1763 to 1765. "One of the most famous and popular political satires commenting on the Stamp Act". (Dolmetsch) Background As Prime Minster, George Grenville (1712-1770) was faced with restoring Britain's finances and reducing the national debt, which had doubled with the cost of fighting the Seven Years' War. In normal circumstances, the first step of government would be to reduce the army from its wartime to a peacetime establishment. Unfortunately, this was prevented by the outbreak of Pontiac's War (1763-1766), broadly occasioned when tribes with traditional links to the French sought to oppose British claims by right right of conquest to their lands. In view of the… Read More

The author was one of the founders, in 1870, of the Oquossoc Angling Association, which was instrumental in getting the state legislature to pass fish & game laws. A delightful Bradley Company catalog of sulkies, etc. including the Single Road Cart, Park Carts, Two-Wheelers, Pericole Cart with Canopy, Bradley Cart Harness, Bradley Handy Wagon plus gear, with prices; an ad for other "manufactures' like the Helve Hammer, Mowers, Horse Rake, Truss Wheelbarrow and more. Established 1832, the introduction whimsically touts the variety of Bradley vehicles and their uses, such as "The owner of a trotter can speed him on the road or at the Driving Park with one of our 3 1/2 Carts, and be prepared to enjoy a 'friendly' brush at a second's notice without being obliged to own an expensive track wagon." Also, " In the larger cities, where pleasure-driving is indulged in to any extent, livery men have found an investment in either a No. 6 or 7 very profitable. Our illustration on page 17 is decidedly suggestive of the pleasures… Read More
