Headquarters, near Richmond, Virginia, 4 Dec. 1864. 8vo (9" x 5.75"), 4 pp., in ink, on plain paper. CONDITION: Paper browned, text faded but legible, some words barely legible but no loss of sense. An engaging letter written by a Confederate Second Sergeant from Texas to a sweetheart on a range of subjects relating to the Civil War, both Northern and Southern. J. M. Adams enlisted as a private in Company C of the 4th Texas Infantry Regiment in Robertson County, TX on 15 July 1861. He served as a scout in the Fall of 1861; saw action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 Sept. 1862; was promoted to Second Sergeant; undertook provost guard in April 1863; was wounded in action at the Battle of Wilderness on 6 May 1864, and was paroled at Appomattox in 1865. Important and scarce political cartoon lampooning the repeal of the Stamp Act under the administration of George Grenville, Prime Minister from 1763 to 1765. "One of the most famous and popular political satires commenting on the Stamp Act". (Dolmetsch) Background As Prime Minster, George Grenville (1712-1770) was faced with restoring Britain's finances and reducing the national debt, which had doubled with the cost of fighting the Seven Years' War. A promotional map for a cruise from Seattle, Washington to Alaska, published roughly a decade after the height of the Klondike Gold Rush (1896-1899) and reflecting development in the state in the first two decades of the twentieth century. This map depicts Alaska, the Klondike District, and the westernmost portion of the Northwest Territory. Highlighted in red are over a dozen salient features in the Klondike and elsewhere: coal and gold fields, copper mines, salmon districts, oil fields, gold placers, a U.S. Seal Preserve, and so on. CONDITION: Broadside good, two tiny punctures, a few tiny chips at margins, no losses to the text; ticket good. A broadside advertising Mack & Arnold's minstrel show at the Windsor, Vermont town hall, with an original ticket to the show. The public is advised that "this Troupe is not composed of one or two legitimate performers and several amateurs but that each and every member is an Etheopian Artist of eminence in his speciality." Managed by George Tillinghast, the troupe included "ten star performers" (including a Frank White who plays "Sam Peril" "who stands on his head") as well as "two thespians" and three "raw recruits" (which include one Lu Arnold). Overseen by musical director J.R. Frebergeister, members of the group played banjo, violin, guitar, with some singing in operatic and comic fashion. Privately Printed: [N.P.], 1890. 8vo., original tan Morocco with gilt stamped red spine labels. A handsome, privately printed edition collecting the author's Civil War letters. As stated in the title, Auchmuty served in the Fifth Corps of the Army of the Potomac, setting aside a career as an architect when the war broke out. The only son of a wealthy family, and a grandson of a signer of the Declaration of Independence, Auchmuty quickly rose through the ranks and retired a Lieutenant Colonel. The Fifth Corps saw service in several of the war's major engagements, including Gettysburg. Found here is Auchmuty's letter to his mother which describes the battle as "the greatest engagement this continent has ever seen." CONDITION: Very good, rubbed at extremities.

A photo album comprising 181 images documenting a wealthy family's eight-and-a-half month stay at a dude ranch in Tucson in the 1940s. This album chronicles the Austin family's time at the "Flying V" Ranch, featuring images of the ranch and its lodgings; dudes on the trail; a "chuckwagon" with African-American cooks; cowboy exhibitions and competitions; skeet shooting; livestock; individuals on horses (posing with rifles and dressed up in cowboy gear) and so on.
