Camellias captured the Western imagination when travellers to Japan and China would return with the so-called 'Japan rose'. It was named camellia by Carl Linneaus, and began to be cultivated successfully and in larger numbers toward the end of the eighteenth century.Berlèse accumulated a significant collection of camellias over twenty years,… Read More

San Francisco, Alan Wofsy Fine Art, 1991. . 4to., Frontispiece, title, xx, 399, [5] pp., 34 plates. Original cloth, dust wrapper, fine. Reprint of the 1952 first edition. "In this Bibliographical Catalogue, the word 'Scenery' is not strictly confined to landscape but includes architecture, and urban and social scenes. I have found it a fascinating subject and a field in which there seem to have been few serious collectors. Many of the illustrations are of real beauty, and the fact that a large number are from books of the greatest rarity and therefore known to few in their original form gives added significance to those which are reproduced in this catalogue. My original idea of recording all books of the period with illustrations printed in aquatint and lithograph printed in two colours has been extended to include examples in which special copies were coloured by hand after printing and, in the case of lithographs, I have included those coloured and even one or two outstanding books containing… Read More

Description:
[London], [circa 1784-1944]. . Archive of circa 50 documents including manuscripts, typescripts and printed materials in English and Hebrew, housed in a black oblong folio wallet (32 x 43 cm), MS label to upper panel. A unique insight into the life of a prominent London Jewish family over the course of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The wealth of documents relate primarily to Victor Abraham (d.1848), an embroiderer of military and naval costume, and patriarch of the family. Newspaper clippings, articles of co-partnership, and a fascinating accounts book logging the price of various items of stock – four gold artillery epaulettes could be had for £8/8 in 1813 – attest to an immigrant family's success in building a thriving business in Victorian England. The archive also bears positive witness to the Abraham family's gradual immersion into London's social elite. A letter from Lady Charlotte Albemarle to Hannah Rothschild (1783-1850), the wife of Nathan Mayer Rothschild, dated 14th… Read More

[London], [Charles Bill], [1702]. . Folio (27.5 x 17.5 cm); woodcut headpiece and initial, black letter; single leaf from 'Anno Regni Annæ Reginæ Angliæ, Scotiæ, Franciæ, & Hiberniæ, primo. At the Parliament begun at Westminster the thirtieth day of December... 1701' (acts of Parliament for the last year of the reign of William III, and the first year of Anne); unbound; 453-454pp. An act of Parliament 'To the end that sufficient maintenance be provided and allowed for the children of Jewish parents, who shall turn Protestants' (p.453). The law arose from the curious case of Mary de Mendez Berta, an eighteen-year-old who was disowned and expelled from the family home following her conversion to Protestantism. A petition was brought before Parliament in an attempt to make Mary's father, Jacob de Mendez Berta, pay for his daughter's upkeep, after which it was resolved that a bill be produced to address her case. The resultant act had some effect in the eighteenth century, and was considered by… Read More

London, Chatto & Windus, 1928. . First edition, first impression, presentation copy inscribed by the author; 8vo; publisher's orange cloth, titles to spine gilt, spine faded and a little cocked, boards slightly bowed. Overall a very good copy. A fine association copy of Harold Acton's first novel, with his signed presentation inscription to the front free endpaper, 'To dear Georgia [Sitwell] hoping to while away a fast and fleeting hour or so of her valuable time with love from Harold October 1928'. Georgia Sitwell (nee Doble, 1905-1980) was the daughter of a wealthy Canadian banker. She married Sacheverell, the younger of the Sitwell siblings, in Paris in October 1925. Harold Acton had been friends of the Sitwells from youth and was a central figure in the Bright Young Things of the 1920s, so brilliantly portrayed by Evelyn Waugh, who based his character Anthony Blanche partly on Acton and on Brian Howard.

Munich, Hermann, 1820-1833. . Landscape folio (40 x 54 cm); title-page with portrait of the artist and 24 lithographs mounted on thick paper, bound with a further 28 plates from a later work, some minor stains but overall very clean, marbled endpapers, a.e.g.; contemporary red morocco gilt, with gilt lettering to upper cover, edges rubbed and corners bumped. Albrecht Adam (1786-1862) was the official artist of Napoleon's Grand Armée on its Moscow campaign of 1812. He travelled with the IV Corps in a group of cartographers and draughtsmen under Prince Eugène de Beauharnais. He wrote, sketched and painted whilst witnessing the horrors of battles such as Borodino, making it to Moscow before returning home to Munich in December. In Munich he produced numerous large scale canvases as well as engravings from his sketches. The present work is an early and scarce example of Adam's memorable journey across Europe, depicting vast landscape views, river crossings, prisoners of war and military camps.… Read More

Clerisseau and two other draughtsmen, Adam visited Spalatro (Split) in order to explore and measure the ruins of the great Palace of Diocletian. He seems to have been travelling with the intention of producing a book which would establish his reputation 'with a great puff' and apparently chose Spalatro because of its residential character, so different from the Greek and Roman architectural monuments being illustrated by his contemporaries such as Stuart and Revett, Wood, and Le Roy. Also, Adam had more natural artistic flair than his contemporaries, so that he included more views and flourishes than are to be found… Read More

London, John Murray, 1816. . 4to; [1], xi-xxi, [1], xxxiii-xxxiv, [6], 6-231, [1]pp.; with large folding map as frontispiece; later half calf gilt by Winstanley of Manchester, morocco lettering piece, a fine example. Robert Adams was an American seaman, the son of a New York sail maker and an Afro-American mother. His real name was Benjamin Rose. Having set sail from New York he was taken prisoner after the wreck of his ship, the Charles. He was fortunate to survive his experiences as a slave, but after three years the British consul at Mogador, Joseph Dupuis, managed (via an agent) to buy back Rose from his then owners and sent him on to the American consul-general at Tangier. Supposed to have travelled back to America from Cadiz, Rose somehow contrived to miss the boat and took ship instead with a British vessel bound for Liverpool. Discharged in Wales as being too sick to work, he managed to beg his way to London and though he was by this time using the name of Adams - perhaps because America… Read More
