According to the book's 1968 foreword, Powell's process also included research 'derived from the exercise of clair-sentience (or extrasensory perception as it is now called)'. Jane A. Tight, square spine. There is some underlining to the first chapter, but the rest of the book is unmarked. Some areas of rubbing, minor edge-wear, and very light creasing to the covers. Introduction by K. W. J. Post. The third book in Achebe's African Trilogy, this realist classic takes place several decades after Things Fall Apart, in a similar cluster of Igbo villages. Tragedy ensues when the book's protagonist, Ezeulu, a priest of the god Ulu, resists participating in colonial indirect rule. Tasked by his people with watching for the first appearance of the new moon, he observes that 'his power was no more than the power of a child over a goat that was said to be his. As long as the goat was alive it was his; he would find it food and take care of it. But the day it was slaughtered he would know who the real owner was.' Nicholas Fasciano's cover features a lovely use of color in its marrying of display type and watercolor-and-ink illustration. 266 pp.

In addition to aesthetic explorations of the works of Elizabeth Bishop and Lorraine Hansberry, this compilation includes a number of formative sociopolitical essays: 'Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence' popularized the term 'compulsive heterosexuality'. 'Notes Toward a Politics of Location' birthed the concept of 'politics of location' and female 'locatedness'. And in the book's title essay, Rich asks other white feminists to examine their own racism and acknowledge that 'as victims of objectification, [they] have objectified other women.'

Famed as an occultist who ran in the same circles as Wheatley and Aleister Crowley (and like these two men, presumably worked for British intelligence), Ahmed amalgamated elements of Vodou and Obeah with the magical methods of the Golden Dawn, and in the 1950s dressed in a purple cowled robe and black mask to greet visitors seeking refuge from malefic spells, according to Ithell Colquhoun, in a room in his Hastings home, which 'was used as a magical temple. . . . He was of Egyptian extraction, white-haired, dark-skinned, and with a neat Van Dyke beard.' He was actually born in Guyana and documented his experiences as an outsider in England in the noteworthy 1937 semi-autobiographical novel, I Rise: The Life Story of a Negro. 320 pp. Mass-market Paperbacks.
