Description:
San Francisco: Louis Roesch Co, 1890. Very Good. Single leaf, red-brown color, some tears and small chips along the edges. Advertisement for a school children's "Play Day" at the Sutro Baths in San Francisco, which included bell ringing, acrobatic feats, dancing, and a special performance from the London Patomime and Comedy Company. The Sutro Baths (1896-1966) was a public saltwater swimming pool in San Francisco, built and owned by entrepreneur and former mayor of San Francisco Adolph Sutro, and heralded at its opening as the world's largest indoor swimming pool. Sutro's idea was to provide an inexpensive recreational swimming facility, mainly for the working class of San Francisco. In true progressive spirit, Sutro also included natural history exhibits at the entrance to the baths as an educational opportunity. However, due to their high maintenance and operating cost, the baths were eventually converted to an ice skating rink, and then sold in 1964 to property developers. A fire in 1966… Read more

Description:
Paris: Chez Gogue & Nee de La Rochelle, 1785. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 8vo. (195 x 130 mm). xxxvi, 366, 80 pp. (Index). Contemporary French green glazed boards, smooth spine gilt, brown lettering piece in second compartment, headcap chipped with loss, extremities worn all round, portion of outer blank margin of title-page torn away (with loss of one letter on the verso), probably to remove a former library stamp, and aiii (touching two letters) both leaves repaired, some age toning throughout (not objectionably). A few margins cropped close, affecting some of the MS prices, outer corner of Vv1 with paper flaw around which the MS annotations were written; a good copy, with faults as described, priced accordingly. Our copy is PRICED throughout (the Grolier Club copy is not) and furthermore it CONTAINS the valuable 80-page Index (which the Grolier Club copy does not). Catalogue of the posthumous sale of the very important library, "universal in scope" according to the Preface, belonging to… Read more

Description:
Washington DC: The Folger Shakespeare Library, 2001. Softcover. Very Good. Quarto, 158 pages, illustrated in black and white. Through the underlinings, emendations, and other marginalia common to early modern readers, this title shows the variety of ways in which readers have related to books over the centuries. The use of books as repositories of birth records, and marginalia (scholarly, esoteric, and profane) is also examined.

Description:
Philadelphia: C.W. Alexander & Co, 1864. First Edition. Original pictorial wrappers printed in blue and black, 9.25 x 5.75 inches, [i-iv], 21-30, [31-32], 39-52, [53-54], 61-74, [75-76], 85-100 pages [i.e. 64 pages], as published. Full-page woodcut illustrations included in the pagination. Copyright date on the title page of 1863; the dated preliminary text dated January 15, 1864. Somewhat worn, some staining and light foxing, especially toward the rear; a good, sound copy. Fact or fiction, the present account celebrates the covert role of women as gatherers of military intelligence during the Civil War. The spectacular illustrated cover is given a full-page reproduction by Alice Fahs' in her "The Imagined Civil War: Popular Literature of the North and South, 1861-1865" (p. 243). The text is accompanied by a number of naive woodcuts, and presents the account of "Maud Melville," the non-de-guerre of "Pauline D'Estraye," who is herself a fictional character invented by "Wesley Bradshaw" (pseudonym of… Read more

Description:
Argau, Switzerland: Jakob Diebold, 1823. Very Good. 4to. 48 pp. Pictorial wrappers, stitched as issued. Tables printed in black & red, lower page corners folded, some moderate edge wear, a bit of foxing or staining. Well worn but generally very good, with a few small tears along edges. An extremely scarce 1824 provincial Swiss Almanac, well illustrated with curious woodcuts including an elaborate title-page border in the neo-classical style, back cover depiction of the slaughter of the Greek patriarch, a double-page fold-out plate of a castle in Baden (small dirt stain at top), and twelve emblematic woodcuts depicting astrological attributes of each month. Owing to the fact that only one other copy seems to have survived, it is not surprising that we have been unable to locate reproductions of any of these woodcuts published elsewhere. The title-page woodcut appears to have been signed in the border the artist / engraved "Z. Morman." Several of the woodcut zodiac symbols are signed "Z." Jakob… Read more

Vol. I: 446 pp. describing 6,251 entries, with full bibliographical details for each item; Vol. II: 336 plates, some in color and hightened in gold, of title pages, illustrations, bindings, and texts, plus an "Index des Planches." Prefaces in each volume by Paul Gavault. Contemporary half-red morocco over red linen by Kelly and Sons, London, for Sotheran. Lovely copy of the standard reference work on children's books, not only French but English, German, and Italian; it is justly considered to be one of the greatest -- if not THE greatest -- bookseller's catalogues of children's books ever producted. Our copy is one of the 900 copies on "papier velin" of a total edition of 1000. * As is stated in the introduction: "This catalogue represents an attempt, the first of its kind, to present to booklovers a collection of early juvenile literature." * The 1979 reprint is absolutely ghastly compared to this first… Read more

Description:
Massena, NY, 1812. Softcover. Very good. Dates: 1812-1829. Small 4to. 12 pp. Stitched. Primary source material for the study of animals as property in rural America at the turn of the 19th-century. This small but fascinating manuscript is of a type that is rarely encountered. It describes the distinctive markings of animals belonging to 47 different owners, all residing in an upstate New York village located on the Canadian border. The MS entries are dated from April 7, 1812 to June 13, 1829. The compiler of the MS was the Town Clerk, J.B. Andrews, Jr. Our MS pre-dates by more than 30 years the first American Brand Book that is described by William Reese in "Brand Books in the Princeton Collections of Western Americana," PULC LXVII, 2 (Winter, 2006): pp. 237-251. We quote: "The history of the printed brand book in the United States begins in Utah in 1850, concurrent with the founding of the Mormon colony at Great Salt Lake and the establishment of a printing press there. Description:
1871. Hardcover. Very good. Oblong folio (350 x 450 mm). With 32 watercolors of high quality by Annibale Angelini delineated from the original frescos. Original red pebbled cloth (shaken), upper cover with the crowned monograph of Prince Camillo IX (Vittorio Emanuele) Massimo. In excellent unrestored state. Preserved in a protective case. An important discovery. This album of watercolors is the only surviving record of the once spectacular frescos and interiors of the elegant garden Casino Felice of the Villa Peretti Montalto alle Terme (later known as the Villa Massimo), built for Sixtus V by famed Roman architect Domenico Fontana. After centuries of neglect, the Villa, its two palaces, and its lush gardens were destroyed in the 1880s in order to make way for the central railroad station in Rome, the Roma Termini. The long-lost frescos of the Casino Felice are of the greatest interest to scholars of Renaissance Italian art: among the artists were C. Nebbia, F. Rosselli, D. Cresti (called il… Read more

Description:
n.d. (19th or 20th century). Two illuminations on thin India paper some vertical creasing, professionally matted and framed. Ad 1 (priapus): 300 x 250 mm (frame size), 198 x 140 mm (visible), 147 x 93 mm (size of illumination). Ad 2 (she-devil): 306 x 231 mm (frame size), 205 x 140 mm (visible), 150 x 83 mm (size of illumination). Sold as a pair. Two weird erotic Indian illuminations, the likes of which we have never before encountered, and are unlikely to encounter again. Popular in Roman decorative art, the winged priapus is uncommon in Indian iconography. Our illumination is of particularly high quality, and depicts a beautiful Indian woman riding a reined priapus perhas twice her size. The priapus is depicted with avain feet and giant wings. The environment is like a strange dream: in the foreground a grey pool with pink flowers; behind are dark green hills with eerie trees and vegetation. In the sky at sunset are what appear to be rain clouds, touched in white. We have been unable to transcribe… Read more

Description:
S.l., n.d. (20th century). Watercolor on paper. Matted (visible 163 x 83 mm) and framed (257 x 150 mm). This weird and wonderful watercolor may be something we will forever regret selling at any price. It is unsigned, but clearly by an artist of considerable imagination. We find the image compelling and highly curious: in the shadow only one hand is holding the mask, and yet the girl is firmly grasping it with two. What is the significance of this demonic mask, and why would a girl be presenting it above her head, in a manner that could almost be described as ritualistic? The child seems to gaze away from the viewer, but who - or what - is she looking at? We unable to explain our fascination with this watercolor. For those who are similarly ensorcelled: no explanation is required.

Description:
London: printed for J. Cooke, 1771. First Edition. Very good. Engraved print, framed behind glass. Print size: 215 x 133 mm, slightly cropped affecting several letters. Frame size: 342 x 263 mm. Slight foxing, some browning along edges, upper left corner slightly curled in. A striking 18th century engraving of a great and terrible Wicker Man. It would appear that an image of the iconic Wicker Man first appeared in print in 1610 with the publication of John Selden's "Jani Anglorum." We find it again in Aylett Sammes's "Britannia Antiqua Illustrata" (1676), which clearly influenced the anonymous artist of the present engraving -- and many others who followed. It is believed that so-called Wicker Man statues were ritually burned by the ancient Druids; that they were at times filled with human sacrifices may be an early modern fabrication. The caption of our print promotes these wild and terrifying claims: "The Wicker Colossus of the Druids, wherein Malefactors, Prisoners of War, and sometimes Innocent… Read more

Venice, 1510. 8vo. in fours. Collation: A-Q4, COMPLETE. 64 ff. (some signatures written in contemporary MS, several erroneously, neat modern foliation in pencil). Paper size: 155 x 105. Watermarks: Northern Italy, ca. 1480-1520 (see below). Bound in late 18th century Italian sprinkled ochre boards, upper cover with title in MS. Text in Italian, and with the titles of several poems in Latin. Several types of Italian humanistic literae cursivae, all apparently by the same person (see images below), numerous corrections throughout. Fascinating Unknown Venetian Manuscript of Unpublished Sonnets and Love Letters, ca. 1510. An important discovery. Unknown manuscripts of unpublished Italian poetry, written in Venice during the age of Aldus Manutius, are rare in private ownership. Paris: Barba, Delaunay, Cavanagh, Les Marchands de Nouveautes, & Tiger, 1803. Hardcover. Very good. Dates: 1803-1824. 16mo., together 5 works in one volume: 144 pp + 179 pp + 160 pp +122 pp + 108 pp., each work accompanied by an engraved frontispiece of which 2 are hand-colored (some fraying along outer edges). Bound in contemporary French half basane over marbled boards, a little worn but suitable for exhibition and study. Highly curious Sammelband of five "Ana," an important genre of late-18th and early 19th century French literature, today little known and under-appreciated by academics. At that time, EVERYONE read Ana, even the critics who excoriated these fugitive pieces of literary ephemera while secretly delighting in their unabashed "bad taste." Concerning Ana, Mornet correctly states: "One misunderstands the history of French thought in the 18th-century if one confines it to the history of strictly literary genres [...] In the provinces especially, far from the theater, the opera, and the… Read more
