The one and one-half page Class Valedictory delivered by Robert Jackson, a white eight-grader, was titled "The Negro in Medicine."

Printed statement on a folded sheet of APF letterhead stationery: "It is our pleasure to present you with this complimentary copy of our Portfolio of Frames, which we are sending to a select group that we feel is sufficiently knowledgable to appreciate the sort of work that we do. We hope that you will find it interesting and that you will enjoy having it in your library ... Most sincerely, A.P.F., Inc." Also laid in was a price list on which the various moldings were priced by the foot with a minimum of six feet.

Ithaca, New York: Elfriede Abbe, 1966. Hardcover. Very Good. woodcuts, 83, [1]p. Original cloth. 32cm. Cover a bit dull with minor rubbing and a hint of fraying. No jacket (did it ever have one?). Copy No. 39 of an edition limited to 100 numbered copies signed by Abbe. Laid in are three handwritten letters of varying length from Abbe to Norman L. Cram, a member of The Caxton Club in Chicago and a few printed pieces about various Abbe items.

Small stain on back cover. Abbot had left, or been forced to leave, the Unitarian ministry before becoming editor of The Index, a major freethought journal. This volume includes numerous speeches and letters of support. Most notable is a letter from Frederick Douglass which celebrates Abbot's "personal rectitude" and his "efforts to break the fetters of religious superstition." Other letters from those unable to attend include Samuel Longfellow (a prominent transcendalist Unitarian minister who was also Henry's youngest brother and one of his biographers), Felix Adler, Moncure D. Conway, George J. Holyoake and many others.

Binding mismatched _- Vol. 1 original green cloth and Vol. 2 original brown cloth but with came blinstamping and same gilt titling same gilt inllustration of front covers. Original marbled endpaper cracked along both hinges in Vol. I and almost entirely uncracked in Vol. II. Modest cover scuffing and wear. Content are sound with extensive, mostly moderate, foxing, in both volumes. All or almost all tissue guards present with some offsetting and foxing.

An American edition of this classic published just a year before the Revolutionary War began.
